Hey everyone, so straight away I’m assuming something got fried but would like to see if someone can ID from the starting behaviour from the video or if they had a similar problem. The whole dash is freaking out, I’m curious maybe it’s the starting motor? The bike temps were reaching 118C when standing in traffic and sometimes even “high temp” popped up. I don’t know if there is something wrong with my bike cooling, but from what I heard it’s normal for these bikes to get hot, but I’m not sure how normal for them to start melting important internal components? Bike specs is 2014 899 with Akrapovic exhaust and rapidbike ecu video: https://streamable.com/tqm69r
118 is too hot mate, that’s head gasket gone territory. I rode mine the other day in 28 degree temps and it never went over 104, ever time it got there the cooling fans knocked it back to 100 degree
Any suggestions what to look at when I get this sorted? In terms of the high temps. I understand this bike is not made for traffic, but it don’t think this is right temp for any traffic. 118C isn’t bad enough I even had “high temp” warning at one standstill instance.
As above ^^^ this is higher than should be possible with everything working as it should. Are the radiator fans working at around 104C?
You need to ensure airflow. Not sure what the laws are in respect of filtering through traffic, but the bike isn't going to do well if left running at a standstill. 118c is 'bad enough', clearly, as it seems to have caused a problem.
I mean “as if 108c isn’t bad enough”. Coolant is topped off, desmo done 2k km ago, so I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m guessing something to do with akra with baffle from pipewerx possibly, or the tuning running rich.
Check the radiators aren’t clogged up with road filth especially the lower one and check the fan come on. Cleaning the rads on mine made a big difference.
When you say coolant is topped. Do you mean both the radiator and the expansion tank, or just the radiator?
Yeah both are topped up. Just got the bike back from mechanic, the battery died and apparently all of the electronics got reset, but picked up bike up and was I was taking it home once again some traffic and once again temps are at 118 and "high temp" came up, so if anyone has suggestions for the fix would be interested to hear. mechanic didn't find anything off. Like I was saying I'm suspecting something might be up either with the akra baffle somehow bringing the temps up (the really close up baffle from pipewerx) or the rapidbike tuning. Maybe I'll try to ride in cooler days, or somehow try to avoid all of the traffic, but this doesn't seem like a good riding experience to be honest lol
Like I already said, clean out the radiators, they get clogged with road shit and don’t cool as well.
https://imgur.com/a/USNKe7q Radiator before as in picture wasn’t looking good, but after I did cleanup with some toothpicks in all of the channels still situation is the same. Gonna drop by Ducati today, I’m really now curious what it will be.
wow... yeah I think that's your issue all right.. Be careful with trying to sort with High pressure water - can flatten a radiator in a matter of moments.
If that were me, I’d look into getting it remapped and see what the temps were on the dyno after mapping. Something’s not right and it could well be the mixture.
Thanks everyone for help, next weekend hopefully will bring for the last time. Today had a check, temps are different at engine and the radiator, so most likely water pump or thermostat issue
