I Phone Plotting Route Tool

  1. I recently ditched my Garmin XT and have gone back to iPhone nav. Tom Tom works well, can import GPX from MRA etc but have to agree with that Scenic is excellent. Heading to Germany in a few weeks time so will give them both a go… is a shame Waze dormant support GPX Import though.

  2. Personally I use MyRouteApp for plotting and a TomTom 450 for navigating. I however only import ITN's from MRA, via MRA's import option that drops the files on the device.

I've been using only this combo for 5 or so years now and it's succesfully taken me round Norway, France, Spain and Luxembourg. That said on a recent trip we had someone using OSMand to navigate with the routes I'd distributed from MyRouteApp.

  3. MyRouteApp Navigation Next was launched this morning. 14 day free trial here. As per my earlier post; I've been on the beta program for this and have got to say it's pretty good. Currently away in Germany on the bike and have been running this alongside my Garmin XT. It sticks to the planned route better than the Garmin but will still get you back on track should you need it to. Maybe not quite yet a fully complete product but it works well and it'll evolve over the coming months. Had I known it was going to be this competent I would have left the XT at home.

  4. Boggy, how do you do that? I was only looking at the Beeline web page the other day and didn't see any mention of that option... Or are you having your phone visible at the same time?

No, I can toggle in Beeline from the Beeline map screen to/from the arrow screen in Beeline. Works a treat. I've added screen shots of both views and it's simply a case of hitting either the 'Arrow' button in top RH corner, or the 'Map' button if you're already in Arrow view. IMG_9088.png

  6. I guess this depends on what you want to achieve, simple A to B planning - Google Maps will work, however in my experience that's just the fastest route, so you then start adding waypoints to make the routes more interesting. However, what I encountered was when you hit a waypoint Google Maps would not progress to the next waypoint until you tapped the screen, so you would need to stop, remove your glove, tap the screen, glove back on, proceed. There maybe a setting within Google Maps but when out on the bike testing this I didn't attempt to figure it out.

Following this I then tried Calimoto and at first I wasn't too impressed, however over time with many updates it's what I use all of the time now, you can create a route on your computer add waypoints, choose the type of route between waypoints i.e. fast/motorway - super twisty. The only real downside is it's not free, but what is. You do get a limited free version, but that's limited to a radius from where you registered the app, and there are no speed camera warnings with the free version. The only other thing lacking is traffic, maybe that is on the road map?

A dedicated motorcycle nav is probably the best option, as it should have to algorithms to understand you're on a bike and want to enjoy the twisties, but it's an additional expense.

  7. So that's your phone screen view rather than being able to see the map display on the Beeline GPS display itself? Thanks.

  8. Kind of. I showed the Beeline App view with me 25 miles away from the start point of the route I'd planned from Wales to the Midlands on Day 1 of 6. It's iPhone yes, not a GPS.

  9. Just got back from a car trip to Normandy and I use MRA with Apple car play, worked really well.

I’d plotted some routes on the laptop and then used the phone to navigate, no issues apart from a road closure and diversion when I had to stop and use the phone to skip waypoint as the car screen didn’t give me the option. Didn’t exactly use one route I’d plotted and missed a couple of roads I’d wanted to take, probably just needed a couple more waypoints to keep me on the route

  10. That said the phone did get very hot

  11. I’ve used the scenic app for a few years and find it to be brilliant. It’s easy to plot your own route or have the app plot it’s own route. Once in use it is easy to see and listen to the instructions.
