Disastrous Introduction To Ducati Life!!

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Steve Cole, Jul 1, 2023.

  1. Just picked up 2016 MTS 1200S and took it back after 10 miles. Massive backfiring no power and then engine management light came on. 17k on the clock. Not impressed. R1200RT before for 8 years not a blip what have I done?

  2. bought one from the wrong place I fear, shouldn’t have been let out the door

  3. Private and just had desmo done by dealer. Maybe they messed something up. Won’t rev quickly just backfires. Will rev if done slowly right upto 10000

  4. I'd take it back to the dealer to have a look, or ask the previous seller to try and get them to sort it

  5. Maybe new belts installed one tooth out, so valve timing wrong.

  6. I will say it, before someone else does.

    Is the exhaust valve stuck?

  7. I have heard that can be an issue. Really my main question is should I just get my money back. Or let the garage take a look. The owner was genuinely embarrassed when I called him. He has offered my money back but I said I will decide Monday when the garage takes look.

  9. stick with it, especially if it turns out its some thing silly and easily fixed, i check mine over all the time and there's always something to sort, they aren't hondas

  10. 2nd vote for checking exhaust valve.

slightly different symptoms but different but but same thing killed my 959 - 50quid for the servo eliminator and about 3kg off the bike in return!

  11. If it is a stuck closed exhaust valve then you can just sort it out with a spring wound over the nipple of the actuating cable once you've disconnected it from the exhaust end. Turn the valve to the open position and wire it in place or remove the flap all together. The valve is just a sound attenuation device to cheat the noise regs, bike runs better without it.

It's a pretty big job to remove the servo and save that weight on the Multistrada.

  12. You really need to plug it into diagnostics to see what the error is but my money is on a failed MAP sensor - which can happen just like that - or, less likely IMO, a stuck exhaust valve. Get the dealer who recently did the Desmo service to verify and repair and get the seller to pay for it - he seems a decent sort having already offered you your money back.

  14. Yes nice bloke. When I went to collect he had even changed the black plastic panel on the nose fairing that was cracked and I didn’t notice. He arranged for decal (Ducati) to be sent to my house. So straight up bloke and mortified that I had this issue. Let’s hope it’s sorted Monday as can’t wait to see what she is really like. I have got 3,000 miles in Italy to do in September so had better be on the money by then! Or I will buy the bmw back! Ouch!

  15. He probably washed it before delivery and filled up a plughole with water.

  16. I would have thought it would have evaporated after reaching temp. It’s going back tk the garage tomorrow. My money is on a plug or exhaust valve stuck shut.

  17. Apparently it’s a grounding issue. Mechanic got a shock from the horizontal cylinder spark plug.

  18. ?

  19. Ouch, that hurts. I once had a lammy with a broken ht cap. It would pop off occassionally. It was a cut down skelly lambretta. I once tried to pop it back down by reaching for it and putting it back in place. Whilst I was riding it. I mounted the kerb in shock and how I never ended up inside a shop I'll never know.
