i have an estate and hate towbars but am now considering one and a trailer for the track slag i need a trailer that is small and foldable etc what do people do? or do i just buy a van

Just posted this on the R53 thread but it’s equally appropriate here! I’ve got the Dave Cooper double collapsible one - it kind of does the job but loading/unloading is a two man job (do it solo at your peril). If I had my time again I’d probably spend the extra on a motolug for the peace of mind and usability. Sports bikes sit proud at the back end as the rails are too close together for the tyre to drop fully between them, which means it’s inherently unstable until heavily ratcheted down. http://www.davecooper.co.uk/trailers/trailers-for-bikes
I had a factory detachable tow bar retro fitted to my Leon by the supplying dealer. Not a cheap option but it gives me all the bells and whistles and no annoying repeater beep with the indicators. Andy
Buy a second hand motolug. Simple to store. Stable. Just make sure bike is well strapped down. You would certainly get your money back come time to upgrade to a van. It’s a motorcycling no brainer.
Witter detachable tow bar. I have one on my 5 series. When it’s off, no one know you have one. Electric hook up folds up behind the bumper.
Ok so I was set on the motolug but that Witter looks very interesting as it adds less length to the vehicle. Are they suitable for road going motorbikes or just trials bikes? I expect the weight difference could be significant esp given my track bike is very lardy
No those racks are only suitable for trials/enduro bikes. It’s a Dave Cooper rack on a witter removable towbar.

Bear in mind any tow at is likely to have a max 80kg weight limit so unless it’s very light you can’t put one of the transverse ones on (safely) I have an old breakdown job, it’s incredibly heavy and does the job but motolug seem to be the way forward. There are others and, like mine, it’s really a two person job to load.
I would say not suitable. Well, maybe just about ok with something like a Defender or G-wagon. The entire weight of the bike, bike rack and towbar act as noseweight for the car, and a typical “family car” will have a limit around 100kg. A rack is great for a kids bike or trials bike, but lifting a heavy bike into one whilst stopping the bike taking chunks out of your tailgate would be a challenge.
I have a Dave Cooper single trailer, it bolts together and apart for storage. It currently hangs on the wall in parts in my man cave. I can load it on my own but as stated it could do with a wheel chock at the front but all depends on budget etc
Can i ask where you got your towbar for the mini from? Been looking for one for my Clubvan for ages but been struggling.
i had to import it from the states - because the Cooper S isn’t technically homologated(?) for towing. It goes into the central brake light hole in the rear bumper above the exhaust. Removable too so I take it out when not using it. http://www.mnidomore.com/ https://www.outmotoring.com/
