I was on the M1 recently doing 60mph. Then the overhead signs said maximum 60mph. Does that mean I have to drop to 50mph? I only ask because i backed off to 55mph, went past a pair of those yellow cameras on the gantry and saw a flash in my mirror. I was in the slow lane and others were going faster than me in the middle and fast lanes. Does a 60mph limit on a motorway mean 50mph for me?
Also, worth noting, if the gantry has a 30/40/50/60, or whatever they decide, with the Amber flashing lights, that is an advisory speed, you cannot be prosecuted for exceeding the signed speed However, if the speed is within a red circle, that is a mandatory speed limit, and you can be prosecuted If you are on a motorway with a hard shoulder which is used as a live lane when busy (so called 'smart motorway') if the board above the hard shoulder is illuminated, it is in use, if it is not illuminated, or has a red X, you must not use it I drive HGV's for a living, and the amount of car drivers that cannot grasp the simplicity of the concept, is astonishing
I think the U.K. is relatively straightforward regarding motor homes. I have an Italian colleague who’s just bought one. He was telling me that at border crossings (Switzerland definitely, not sure about France) you have to pull onto a weigh bridge. If your axle/wheel/weight ratios aren’t within a certain parameter, you can’t enter. And it’s quite tight…. He said if he’d known about it, he wouldn’t have bothered. He’s pretty much stuck to Italian touring.
It was 60mph in red. My question is, does that mean 50mph for me in my “commercial van” that is actually a camper van?
Nah, you’ll be fine. The flash you saw would’ve been for Verstappen and co in the middle and fast lane…
As Robert stated it’s still 60 for you as on a motorway your maximum is 70, it’s only dual carriageways that you’re allowed a 60 mph maximum.
You need to have a word with your gaffer, got overtaken loads today by trucks going faster than my indicated 60mph on cruise control along the A14.
Mway speeds are the same for vans and cars. It’s only dual and single carriageway that are less, and car derived vans are treated as cars rather than vans. Eg combi van
Silly question but how would the cameras know your a van or a car on the motorway isn't is just speed that's being checked
Pl Plus, if it is in the mandatory variable speed limit on a motorway, the limit within the red circle applies to all vehicle types, HGV's, vans, coaches do not have to lower their speed from the car derived speeds E.g. variable at 60mph, all vehicle types can travel at 60mph 40mph, all vehicles must not exceed 40mhp, regardless of vehicle type
