Bit of a random one & a funny feeling I know the answer already but has anyone recently sold a bike on eBay and had a decent experience or is it still full of piss takers? Appreciate current climate so could well put me off selling anyhow but thinking of advertising my 1198s on there amongst other places as I just don’t use it and need to buy a car. Rich,
I advertised on Auto Trader, a good experience with the brand and their system to protect the internet/phone/email identity of the advertiser. Still have both bikes though. I’d rather keep the bikes in the dining room than advertise on eBay. Andy
Depends what you’re selling. I’ve always had a good experience. Spend the time and as much detail with your description and lots of quality photos and generally buyers can spot the good sellers from the bad. I’ve sold £20k bikes with sellers transferring the funds without even seeing the bike, just my experience but I know others have have had a nightmare with buyers, as you would with any platform..
I stopped selling on eBay years ago because of the hassle of it , doesn’t matter how much detail you put on the ad you will still get a load of questions that you’ve already answered in your description or people offering piss take money because they are doing you a favour apparently. Wound myself up just thinking about it
With both ebay and FB you have to treat each idiot as a potential buyer and not all potential buyers as idiots...It's still very hard work! FB need to do away with 'is this still available' option....
I've just sold my high end push bike on there. All seems to be going well, the guy lives up the road and is collecting it at the weekend. Will let you know if it goes Pete Tong!
Why not stick it on here in the meantime Ambrose? Statistics might show low results for some sales on here but at least you have a greater chance of finding a genuine buyer under "the public gaze".
No market place is perfect. Some have fees that do seem a little high, and attract *dreamers instead of buyers. But there's very few that have the number of viewers that eBay, Autotrader & FB. I've never bought anything from Autotrader but plenty from the other two. * dreamers includes mad, tyre kicking, broke, questioning, chancers!

Yes, I sold my lads Aprilia SX50 on eBay. It wasn’t too bad, had a couple of stupid low ball offers which as I stated in the advert I would ignore. Sold locally to a lad, we worry about his old moped and hope it survives. Very much a different market to what you are selling though. Good Luck
I have sold 8-10 bikes with the last bike sold 2 moths ago. Been an ebay member for 20+ years with no issues and in most cases the bikes sell within the first 2hours. The quickest I sold one was around 9 minutes. Nothing but positive experiences from me. I write the advert clearly to manage expectations leaving little to no room for stupid questions.
Key question is when looking for, of thinking of looking for, a new bike where do you go? If it’s eBay, that probably answers your question Just be prepared for lots of ‘swap for a fj1200? 600 bandit? Caravan?’ Nonsense. Either ‘no’ or ignore, it’s no biggie
I think if you’re an experienced eBay punter, both buyer and seller, it should be relatively easy. If you’re dipping your toe into the eBay experience, you could well turn into a mass murderer such is the frustration. I flog stuff on eBay via my mate as it often used to do my nut in.
Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a time limit on how long an advert stays up nor is the time it’s been listed for. A lot of listers don’t bother to remove stuff once sold/no longer available. You can as I recall delete the standard ITSA tag with your own text.
Be prepared for lots of, “wOtS uR bEsT pRiCe m8?” “will u swap for a Cat N 2002 gixxer?” “it’s not worth wot ur asking as my mates sold one of these for half that price last week” etc
