V4 V4 Pikes Peak 2800 Miles Whining Sound And Oil Overfilled

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Mark Arnold, Aug 25, 2023.

  1. Hi all, recently picked up a used Pikes Peak V4 and ive noticed a whining noise at 3- 5k revs in the lower gears - is this normal? bike has done 2800 miles. I have also noticed the chain has a tight spot where there isnt much slack but then as you rotate the wheel it loosens up quite a bit - could this be the issue?

Hopefully I am getting a new chain shortly and this cures it but wanted your opinions

Also when I got it home I found the engine oil is too high and I have to lean bike over about 10 degrees to bring on the maximum - well done Ducati Leeds for overfilling it dumb arses - should I take some out?

  2. Adjust the chain to the tight spot on the side stand using the chain guide in the tool bag. Lots of chains develop a tight spot, but as long as the loose part of the chain is not excessive, it should be ok. Ducati Glasgow overfilled my Multi. Took it back and they still didn't get t right . Ended up taking the excess out myself.

  3. I've just picked up a used PP too and I also noticed a whine at 4K revs. Since the S1000RR I part-exed also did it I'm assuming its something to do with the gear box. Maybe how the cogs are cut and mesh together in a modern box? I might have noticed on the V4S demo bike I took out if the exhaust wasn't so bloody loud!
I'm not worrying about it, unless it grenade's itself.

  4. I have just checked the chain and its got a tight spot which basically made the chain have minimal bounce so its got to be that - I have reset the slack last night to 28mm at the tightest spot and will see how it goes. I've also just removed the 2 baffles from the racing exhaust system so hopefully it drowns it out a bit more. I'm going to drain some oil out this weekend as I'm not happy with it overfilled - the dealers should be shot !!!

  5. Funnily enough, my first thought on reading the OP was, “Ducati Glasgow” - over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bike back from them without a problem that they’d created, although I’ve haven’t used them since they were bought out by Ducati Manchester. I now use Ducati North, with who I’m delighted

  6. I noticed a whine on the V4S I test rode a few months back. Now I have my own V4S, there is also a slight whine at lower revs. No doubt "a characteristic of the machine sir"!
If it had a louder exhaust we may not notice it!

Re oil level, I had to visit a dealer whilst in Germany back in June for a slight issue. They took out 1/2 litre of oil.
Apparently it takes about 4 hours for the oil to settle, so after a service etc, I guess the dealer doesn't want to wait that long!
Mine is currently in Riders with an oil leak, which was also picked up by the German dealer. Known issue apparently.

  7. Confirmed new water pump required. German dealer said it was a known problem but mainly on the earlier bikes not a 2023.
    Warranty it is.

Still noticed the whining noise at about 3k revs.

  9. You don’t have your wife on the pillion do you? I find they make a whining noise…
