Good evening, Looking to replace: Gear shift rod, ball joint ends - £13.39 each - M6? Suspension tie-rod ball joint ends - £116.23 each - M8 or M10? 748 Bip W Reg / 2000 Is there anything special about these parts part from the price? All 4 ends have a different parts code so do I assume the only difference is possibly a LH thread for one end?? I've found a UK supplier that sells Stainless Steel rod end bearing versions for a fraction of the 'official' price but need to know the specifications if anyone knows them (without ripping their bike apart)! Also, any supplier suggestions would be greatly appreciated- no rush as I've plenty to keep me busy! ;-) Cheers RR.
Yes, L/H thread is the only difference. I bought an M6 one not long ago for the steering damper, from a local bearing shop. Cost about £3 and felt quality enough. I would pay decent money for the height adjuster ones though as they are far more critical.
There’s a great company located at Knockhill Circuit that do rod ends - unfortunately I cannot remember their name right now. I used them to replace the rod ends on my 749 and 916. Unfortunately, I am just about to leave to go away for a few days otherwise I’d dig out their details and the rod end specs.
It's worth looking at the good-quality bearing manufacturers such as SKF. Example link shows M6 with PTFE and bronze alternative bearing surfaces. Important thing IMO would be low clearance (= low slop)... https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=skf rod end&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuZGnBhD1ARIsACxbAVhH9JUfVtjHQaHfFb8dxw0NIZta2m274OlW6zRC12qJU0ma7bSLiMsaAv9aEALw_wcB&
I get them from McGill Motorsports; https://www.mcgillmotorsport.com they do nice quality teflon lined versions that are much better than the OEM parts.
Recently fitted an adjustable ride height linkage to the 959 Fitted some fluro bearings Which I got from a company called ABC Autosport These were there M.S range Which I've found to be very good
This. The cheap ones have slop. You can read the technical specifications for each part on their website.
Yes, the rod-ends on my Monster floating rear brake rod developed slop within a year or so (and I don't even use the brake much!) so I replaced them with some from McGill and 10 years or so later they are still slop-free. Also using them for the ride-height rod on the 916 plus gearshift linkages on Monster and Guzzi (don't need them on the 916 gears as I have a direct shift lever). I wanted to replace the ends on my Monster's rear hoop as they're a bit scruffy but, unfortunately no-one seems to make them with the M10 x 1.0mm, fine pitch thread but they still work fine so no real bother.
This what I love about this forum, so much help, support and suggestions where to buy - saves purchasing duff goods! Many thanks to all - now, time to browse and buy! Cheers RR
99.9% sure it was McGills who I also used for the suspension rod bearings, far better than the OE parts. Agree with above, friendly bunch and speedy delivery.
Don't happen to recall the thread size, pitch, direction etc. do you? The parts diagram and price list don't specify these details. Cheers RR
Dig em out for you in a bit, from memory they are nothing out the ordinary, ie m8x1.25 type so whatever it measures. I will check in a bit
