900 Superlight Due Some Love

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Kevin Tallant, Aug 30, 2023.

  1. My 1994 superlight has snapped a vertical head bolt. I am struggling to find part number for upgraded black HTS bolts to replace stainless steel ones?
It is also due chain & sprockets, front wheel bearings, new front carriers for discs, along with desmo service. Luckily I've got replacement carriers, but what's best replacement chain & sprocket set available?
Might get engine paint tided up when engine out, suppose at almost 30yrs old she deserves some love.

  2. Try Baines for Cyl Head Studs. Mine snapped one in 1996 / 97 at 14,000 miles and I had Baines fit a full set of their own spec studs - still going fine at 74,000 miles.

  3. Kevin,
Is the number not the same (76610012B) and they just supply the correct material. I bought a set from cornerspeed years ago to replace mine - sorry thrown packets. I do remember the old ones are silver, I have just looked and some had a M stamped and some had an X stamped on the end. My new black ones had a 0 stamped.

Chain, I got a DID 520VX3. GB (gold & black). There are some all gold which I think are a bit stronger but are quite a bit more expensive. The 520VX3 was over the original spec of what I think the original was (520VL) and only just under the more expensive all Gold.

I am running a 15T - 40T. I never tried the original 37T back. 40T is OK but still find it a bit low / high (I can never remember) - not running very well at lower speeds you know what I mean. I have just bought a 42T back so will see how that goes. I would have stuck with the 40T but an original 42T in good condiditon came up for not bad money.

Regarding engine tidy up - step away from the paint can, aquablast is the only way to go.

I have 92 900ss but presume all is the same. I believe the std chain lth is 96 links and the 15/40 fitted, I will have to see about the 42T, will report back.

    Cheers Gaz

  4. I have an unused sprocket I could sell cheap, I'd have to get brand and teeth, I'd go with DID chain. I had to change my stuff for the OZ wheels as they use a completely different sprocket, but it's a gold DID chain, vx3 from memory. The studs are all high tensile now, available from Ducati or Stein Dinse if you use them.

  5. Thanks for replies all. Mine runs like a pig below 3000 revs and doesn't really clear her throat till about 5k. Always thought carbon cans and cut airbox was to blame, wonder if gearing would help. Don't really need the almost 140mph to end in my life these days!

  6. Yes, I get a bit twitchy at 100 mph so quite happy to sacrifice a bit of top end speed. I will try and check the 42T as soon as it comes to see if it fits on a 96T chain. There seems to be quite a bit of difference in prices for a few extra links you may not need (on the MPW web site at least).
Do you have 37T on the back?

    Cheers Gaz

  7. Not sure Gaz I'll have a check later

  8. I have a 38 tooth Ducati Z38 36810 on rear & 14 tooth on front, which seems slightly strange. Guessing previous owner fitted it, but seems like this is rear was usually on Ducati S4.

  9. Ok that ratio is close to a 15/41. I've never been keen on going down on the front, look up polygonal effect. I am not sure of the figures but can see how this would increase wear.

    Cheers Gaz

  12. If you still need a stud I'm fairly certain I've got one from my original 900 Monster kicking around somewhere. Brand new from memory
