848,1#98 Or Panigale Track Bike, Or Insurance Write Off.

Discussion in 'Wanted' started by ScottyM, Aug 30, 2023.

  1. Looking for an 848, 1098 or 1198 or Panigale to use as a track bike or an insurance write off to convert to track use.

  2. That’s quite a price range, from 4k to 12k

  3. Budgets not that large! Up to 6k max, for the right bike, but want to be spending less really. Had an 848 as a track hack last year, got on really well with it, and regrettably sold it!:pensive: So now looking for another or a 1098 or even maybe an 1198 or 899/959 if I’m lucky, not holding my breath for the latter 3 though, but you never know…

  4. Superbike factory have a couple of 1098 around your budget

  5. PM sent.

  6. Pani everytime.

  7. For sub 6k? Good luck to OP finding one that isn’t fit for parts only. Even 848’s push that budget.

There were a couple of 848’s on Facebook track trim about 5k last week

  8. Couple of 848s track ready on Shitbay recently for 4k. One was a Corse SE that pricked my ears up, low mileage, KTech forks, scruffy bodywork but looked clean otherwise. Stolen and recovered with hacked off numbers and no paperwork to back it up…errrr no thank you!

  9. Yes, I did see them and could be an option…

  10. Ok, no mention of budget in opening post... From personal experience I wouldn't own or especially track an 848, 1098 or 1198 unless the mains had been checked and/or upgraded. Probably the pistons and sprag as well. They also have a rep for being horrible to corner on track unless to invest $$$ on suspension upgrades.
Maybe an 848 as less stress on the motor will, but you'll probably get bored with it pretty quickly.
If you can't stretch to a Pani, buy Jap...:astonished:

Edit - Talk to Louigi Moto re how many gearboxes he's repaired...Don't fit a QS to one either.

  11. kinda inclined to agree with nelsons here (sadly) unless you really really want to track the 1098/1198 and have deep enough pockets for engine/gearbox work when the (fairly inevitable) time comes.

  12. I do have a 959 that I’ve done a few days on this year.
I’m only looking to change bikes as was using an 848 last year and got on really well with it. Plus after a bit of grass tracking last time out on 959, with my green laning skills saving the day, and then my mate totalling his bike 2 days later at Brands, cartwheeling it over the tyre wall and clearing the fence behind, it’s made me think twice about using 959 as it’s too good to trash in an off. Plus I don’t remember feeling so knackered after a day on track with 848 as I do on the 959…
So.. looking at a cheaper option like the 848 that I’m too fussed about if I bin it, and thought about 1#98 for a bit more power, but after your comments about reliability, might swerve the 1#98 option….o_O I have heard a QS can destroy the chocolate gearbox aswell!:joy:

  13. GSXR 750 if it’s cheap kicks. They are epic.

  14. Probably my all time favourite for the amateur track day enthusiast. Certainly suits young Reece in the SuperSport/GP2 class. Andy

  16. GSXR is the light side.

  17. It’s prob the better bike to be fair, MCNs Neevesy loves them. I’m just too attached Italians.

  18. If it had to one of those in your budget i'd prob have the 848. Less stressed motor, wet clutch, and cheaper replacement engine when it does go.
If I went back to the track, I'd be looking at a GSXR or Blade these days. I love the Italians, however they don't love you back much, certainly the main dealers don't or the cost of parts.
One of my mates has an early injection R6, he's owned it for over 10 years, which he now races, it's done 40k mostly on track, the abuse that thing has had and it's still going! It's lost a few horses on the way and had a new cog in the gearbox. But, on and on it goes.
