V4 Chain And Sprockets

  1. After three track events annd about 2,500km in total, I noticed that my chain was getting quite slack. I tightened it up to specification but was surprised at the amount of play it already had.

What are the best chain and sprocket sets to use (520), and is it quite straightforward to do this yourself? I have the tool that’s supposed to be used for fitting the chain. I would need to obtain a chain tension adjuster tool and probably a torque multiplier as a chap at a recent track day made removing the wheel look easy using this.

I’ve never done this sort of thing before, but I do have the tools to do it, other than the above.

  2. Can of worms,..

  3. I think I’ve seen those at Aldi…

  4. You don’t need to remove the wheel, or did I misunderstand something?

  5. I decided to go for the D.I.D sprockets and gold chain, really pleased with them.

  6. Probably not. As I said - no idea… This sort of thing seems to me about process and torque settings and I doubt it’s that hard. Everything I do to the bike at the moment is for the first time though so I’m always happy to ask dumb questions to avoid silly errors.

  7. I’m interested in getting the best stuff as usual (without necessarily going completely daft).

Is fitting a new chain tricky? Obviously a mistake could be rather catastrophic but I’ve watched a few videos and it doesn’t look too difficult.

The chap in the garage next to me on the last event at Brno was a Swiss Ducati dealer and had all the tools, all the knowledge off the top of his head and was super-helpful. I should just book every track day that he attends… :grinning:

  8. Riveting a chain is not difficult if you have the right tool. Plenty of YouTube tutorials for that. I did my first one ever a few months ago on my 748 and I didn’t lose the chain at snetterton so that’s a win o_O

  9. 520 conversions is simple and as many have said with a decent chain riveting tool it’s simple.

DID is reputable brand as are Renthal or AFMA. I use Tsubaki chains on our V4 race bike.

Sprocket wise the same comment applies, most brand names are good quality. Ali sprockets obviously wear quicker but are a little lighter, and some may require an additional sprocket carrier.

SITTA are the best in my experience, better quality than most and offer a good balance in longevity and weight saving. Note if you are interested in adjusting gearing regularly the quick change sprocket carrier is a worthwhile purchase.

Keep in mind if you do change the chain and sprockets to anything other than standard you should adjust the ride hight to compensate for the change in geometry. The Pani is particularly sensitive to ride hight changes, but without the right kit it is a PIA to do unfortunately.

  10. Thanks.

I have a SP2 so it already has a 520 chain and sprockets.

  11. Perfect, just replacing then :upyeah:
