thinking of getting a 2012S

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by lacmac, Aug 15, 2013.

  1. I have moved to Malaysia and have the chance to buy a used 2012S with panniers and a few extras, unsure about warranty.
Its going to cost almost £20k due to the high import duty,so will be by far my most expensive bike.

Ive been reading through this and the global forums and also other Ducati model forums and from what ive read, the Multistrada is quite problematic.Plenty of niggles and i see quite few posts from complainers who are told to stop moaning.Others say well its a Ducati, its to be expected.

I have been a biker for almost 30yrs and had almost as many bikes. But ive never had a bike with a warranty.I have had problem bikes of course but not as expensive to repair such as this one.

If the Multistrada is so good, would any of you buy one without a warranty? If not,it really doesnt say much for it.especially how much it costs.I might at best get 1 year warranty, but i would want to keep it longer than that.

  2. Personally, no.

  3. You have to evaluate the risks yourself.

Most of the problems have slowly been worked out. As bikes become older there wil be more and more specialists who can solve any problems for you.

  4. If it goes wrong all that it will take to fix it is money. How much would you expect it to depreciate a year and compare that to a likely repair bill, the two are not disproportionate. Can you afford to take the risk ?

  5. How much difference would there be in the sale price of an early (say 2011) 1200S if it had recently had the suspension fail and be replaced compared to one that had been trouble free up to that point? Assume both have a maximum of 6 months warranty left and have covered similar mileage.

  6. Its seems like its not worth the risk without warranty. And its a lot of money just for 1yr piece of mind. And more so if something like the ECU,display or suspension breakdown.

Will you all be selling your bikes when the warranty expires? I imagine used prices without warranty will plummet.

  7. Buy a bike from a dealer and there is a 'warranty', even if it is out of the 'manufacturers warranty'. Any fault that exists is assumed to have been there at the point of sale and it is the dealers responsibility to put it right. Obviously the devil is in the detail but that is the gist of it.

Prices do plummet, it is called depreciation.

However I think a good point is being raised here as bikes (and cars) become ever more complex the age at which they become economic write offs gets less following failure.

I have never understood why anyone would buy a 3 year old Range Rover for example, but they do and I am sure it will be the same for bikes like the Multistrada. Not least because they are very good bikes.

  8. I bought my 2011 S Touring this year. Small niggles (like the centre stand getting in the way when you want to move your foot back) have been identified & rectified either by me or my local dealer. I now just get on it and smile! The best all round bike (and I've had a few...) I've ever had. Though she'll never see off road dirt.......

  9. Thanks for all the replies. Much appreciated.

Will have to check to see if all the common problems/niggles have been addressed. And see about the warranty.

As Johnv mentioned about bikes becoming more complex the day has come that you have to buy from a dealer now.

Gone are the days when you can do a roadside repair. Not unless your a electronics technician.

How long is Ducati's extended warranty available for?

  10. In the UK and Europe, the basic two-year warranty can be extended to a third year. Seems a good bargain. No idea about Malaysia though.

  11. I understand that it also has to be taken out within the 1st 18 months from new.

  12. Mmmm sounds like I'm unlikely to get any warranty on it then.

A new one here costs almost 30k!

  13. Check out any BMW GS forum, you would never buy one and I've had 2. Have a Multi S Sport bought new last year, 4500 miles so far without a hickup.

  14. True Edward, in fact forums are more focused on problems and upgrades rather than promoting the good points.
Bit like searching Google for a headache remedy, next thing you'll think you've got a tumor!
