V4 Rear And Front Axle Nut Socket Tool

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Veetwin, Sep 26, 2022.

  1. I have one of those 55/30mm combined socket tools for the 1260 and carried under the seat, used it once in Spain!
Now looking to get a combined 36/30mm tool for the V4 and not finding anything out there. I have a 36mm socket (big heavy steel one) for the rear nut and I believe that the front socket size is 30mm ??
The idea is that would be just for emergencies to remove a wheel / tyre change when touring - same as the one I carried on the 1260. Any found one anywhere?

  2. @Veetwin - I've got the same problem

I brought a couple of 36 mm bi-hex sockets (1/2" sq. drive, deep, impact + 3/4" sq. drive) plus a 36mm combination spanner.

I've got a 3/4" sq. drive breaker bar which is good for undoing the rear wheel nut and a torque wrench (1/2" sq. drive, 70 to 330 Nm) which is good for doing the nut up to the required 180 Nm. I've still got 55 mm sockets I used on my 1200 including a 55/30 mm socket which I carried around for years and never used.

The brought the spanner thinking that it would adequate for chain tensioning when on tour - apart from being big and heavy, it's just not long enough unless I stand on it which I don't think would be a good idea. Maybe a single sided swing arm with eccentric chain adjuster isn't such a bad idea after all.

  3. The 36/30 sockets I've found so far are:

    https://gegshop.nl/en/ducati/11885-...-drive-tool-front-rear-wheel-nuts-ducati.html

"The tool is machined from solid in light alloy and anodized for optimal colour durability" - glad the colour is durable, not sure the 1/2" sq. drive socket would be at 180 Nm.

Also it seems very expensive at over 77 Euro.

This one is made from steel but would cost nearly $90 posted - so that will be £90 soon :-(

  4. Thanks for those links Steve, as you say expensive and getting more so soon!
The alloy ones are almost single use sockets as they bend, would prefer a steel one.

  5. I've come to the conclusion that the 36mm spanner I purchased for chain adjustment when on tour just won't be up to the job and in any case is too big and heavy.

I think I'll end up buying on the 36mm bi-hex / 30mm hex sockets made from aluminium together with a telescopic 1/2" sq. drive wrench (e.g Hilka 06130012 from Amazon). I think an aluminium socket should be OK for occasional use providing it's not used with an impact driver. Still a big and heavy option but I can't think of anything better.

  6. I’ll just make sure I’m riding with you on tour Steve and hire it from you if I need it;)

  7. My CNC 36/30mm Socket arrived today - Thanks to @steveb123 - looks good and is a good fit on the wheel nuts.
Just to note the socket is quite deep and my 1/2" drive bar only just fits into the socket; I happen to have a short 1/2" drive extender so will also carry that with me on tours etc.

  8. I see than Iconic Parts are now selling a 36mm/30mm 1/2" drive socket for the Multi V4/V4S/V4 Rally (plus some other ducati models) front and rear wheel nuts. Made from aluminium (high strength, garde 7075) and not intended for use with an impact driver.

Not cheap at £44.99 + VAT but the postage is reasonable at £3.99 - all up £57.98

  9. How much is the same thing on eBay or AliExpress?

  10. @steveb123, did you end up getting the Iconic Parts 36/30 socket?

  11. Unfortunately, Iconic Parts weren't making/selling a 36/30 socket when I purchased mine as their one is a lot cheaper.

  12. I bought one and it's disappointing. The "High Strength Aluminium 7075 can't handle the 180N torque, distorts and jams onto the axle nut. I've reverted to a traditional 36mm steel socket.

  13. Have you raised this problem with Iconic?

The 30/36 socket I brought from G&G is still in good condition after a number of uses.

  14. I use the Iconic dual socket at 180Nm and it has not distorted or shown any damage.
