Buying A Helmet From Europe

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by shakeys dad, Oct 7, 2023.

  1. Im Looking to buy a new helmet ,and it's almost half price from chromeburner. Has anyone bought a helmet from a European retailer, and knows what kind of import costs it will incur. I've tried looking on the net for answers, but it's about as clear as mud.

  2. Without being specific, from my experience you’ll end us paying almost as much if not the same after all the costs.

  3. Helmets are zero rated for Vat.

I think import duty is 2% but there is a strong chance the delivery company might try and charge you vat as well even though it is nil.

  4. I bought last month from ChromeBurner. Saved nearly £200 on uk price for exactly the same shoei NXR2 helmet. There’s no VAT on helmets as mentioned on the CB website. Agree with anbove think I paid ann andditional tenner from FedEx. Arrived in 2 days. No brainier !

Just make sure it’s exactly the helmet you want and in the correct size etc. Returning would be at your cost and a pita.

  6. Did you buy it through ebay, or from there website

  7. What helmet are you looking at ? Andy

  8. Shark race r Pro gp

  9. Bloody hell, the basic matt black helmet is £300 cheaper at Chromeburner ! The only issue for me is if you have a warranty issue, I have experience of UK outlets telling you to send it back to where you bought it from. If you are okay with that, seems like a no brainer to me. Andy

  10. I've being caught out with a helmets expiry date before now when buying online.

Yes, it may be 'brand new' i.e unused but it could be 2 years into its 5 year life.

  11. Before Brexit I bought a helmet in the UK, it came with a technical approval certificate and helmet sticker for trackdays.
That's not a thing in NL, so that might be a problem?

  12. The 5 year timeframe is generally accepted as applying to polycarbonate construction helmets. Modern multi fibre and carbon construction helmets are advertised as having an 8 to 10 year life. In the real world, it’ll be the internal foams that will deteriorate before the shell. Andy

  13. The stickers are readily available on ebay, used to be about a fiver

  14. I must admit I always thought the expiry date was for the internal (polystyrene) foams and not the shell.

And it's these foam inners that do most of the impact absorption.

  15. I hope the Shark helmets are built to better standard than the one I had a few years back. The inner shell literally detached from the outer, add in that the recess for the supplied pinlok did not locate properly. It would pop out, typically at the wrong time. Like just before crossing the St Bernard pass when it was snowing. Never again. To both!
Edit. Just remembered the seat belt type fastener just popped open one day. Lost all faith in it and would not even give it away. It went in the bin.

  16. ChromeBurner direct, I bought the helmet, they contacted me to say it was out of stock and we’ll refund you, which they did. Week later emailed me to say back in stock, I rang them and they even picked the phone up and I spoke to a human, yes really. Bought the dark visor which was also cheaper and you can’t buy in the UK.

  18. They are selling the NXR2 Scanner for €369 in Andorra, in the big shop on the mainstreet, forget the name. It's €479 in Chromeburner. It's a nice drive to pick one up too.

  19. So I ordered it Sunday, arrived today with no extra charges .a massive saving of over £450 if I'd bought in the uk
