Try to look on the bright side .... ..... we are never going to have a shortage of Sociologists and Media Studies graduates ......
Tbh, I know you say you have not got time, but if you could find it, they are not complicated bikes to work on. Just grab a workshop manual and photo/video as you go...packing pieces into plastic bags or tubs.. If you are keeping the main cases intact you'd be surprised at how easy, and fast, you'd advance. I managed to have the engine out in an afternoon. Ps: Do you have the snapped stud in hand? If so post a pic (with a tape measure alongside), then we will be able to see if it has snapped flush or below the crankcase surface...or fingers crossed above. Pps: bonus is that you say it is a vertical stud, it's the horizontal ones that seize...so if you have any purchase on what stud left it's likely to come out without any major drama.
To be fair one has engaged with me and has honestly said its not for him, the other Funts are just avoiding my calls/emails... I'm not a vindictive person & would rather move on to find a better level of service.
Got a shock when you said a 94 Ducati was early But seriously any competent small engineering firm could get that stud out as long as no one has tried to butcher it. Taking the engine out is fairly simple so why not have a go?
I should try myself, but working 6 days a week from late August till Christmas and have limited tools/work space /knowledge. Might have a go in New year when work is quiter and kids not filling my day off. There's a proper engineering firm at the end of my road that could probably pull studs if I can't.
As others have suggested and when you get the spare time remove the engine then you'll find more people would be interested as no restriction on access then.
The mechanic/ friend I was referring to works for a large Japanese bike showroom with associated workshop (Hunts) near to where I live Have you considered looking at this option closer to where you are based. Might be worth a shot calling in on a few and sussing them out, if you haven’t done so already.
There’s a workshop in Hastings that’d do it, but it’s a bit of a way from you. Google Moton Motorcycles if you’re interested.
Have you tried Desmo shed in Barnet? Really good guy and knows his stuff, might also know someone if it’s not his thing
One man band so to speak and always busy, has picked the phone up when I’ve called or left a message though. Just round the back opposite the cinema on the high street. Worth a visit mate if local
Sad but oh so true. I spent twenty years building an award winning engineering department specialising in supporting kids and young adults with special needs develop engineering skills. We won national competitions against apprentices from companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Peugeot and Bentley plus many others. We exhibited our electric racing cars at national events. It cost £0 because we self funded each and every penny. The people involved went on to a wide range of jobs, all engineering based. Then ‘kin stupid new management came in and decided that the students weren’t doing enough writing and stopped it dead. I was forced out and the students now get pointless bits of paper before going on benefits. Properly does my nut in how we don’t appreciate skills in GB while bankers have trashed the country. Rant over…..
I should visit, he sorted a mates 1200 monster & only about 14 miles away, just have to brave Kahns ULEZ on my old bikes/van.
I’m getting the impression old school mechanics don’t like to communicate via email It’s the boots on the ground technique you’ll need.
yip, i can go with that. i rarely if ever check em. and i certainly don't have time to reply to them. timing is important too. never first thing on a Monday.
I had broken stud problem on an exhaust manifold many years ago. I sent the head to an engineering firm who burnt it out by spark erosion. There's always an answer if you keep looking.
You could try Traxden in Park Royal - Alex rebuilt my 900SS engine 4 or 5 years back, and its still going strong.
