1200 2012 Ms 1200s Throttle Hang When Off Throttle

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Darren4, Oct 9, 2023.

  1. Just bought a 2012 MS 1200s and when I come to junctions or just roll off the throttle (totally rolled off to the stop ) I get a rev surge fluctuating around 2.5 to 3k and it takes a good few seconds to come back to idle. It also comes an issue when looking for engine breaking as just pushes. Any ideas on what this could be as I’ve searched the forums as best I can and can’t find anything on this issue. It has standard exhaust and desmo serving carried out at a great indi by previous owner in March. And advice would be greatly received. Thanks in advance.

  2. Take read of this thread: 1200 Dvt Misfire Stutter Low Down

  3. Thanks for that, will take a look

  4. Mine is not the DVT it’s the earlier model with just single spark plug per cylinder

  5. The same checks apply to your fault finding mission.
You sure you only have 1 plug per cylinder?

  6. Twin spark was 2013. Andy

  7. Possibly a failing MAP sensor. Some 2011/12 Multistradas and Diavels experienced sensor failure. I had one fail on both. Andy

  8. I have a 2013 that had/has this behaviour on and off since 2017. You would approach a stopping point, roll off throttle, clutch in and maybe even go to neutral and it would be happy idling along at 2.5k and then would very, very slowly drop back to a regular idle if stationary long enough.

It went away for a while after a "major" service and fixing a more obvious popping and skipping at idle issue. That was a failing injector seal. I can't say I noticed it again for a year or so and it came back. It mostly happens however in cold or wet weather and on mine I could often solve it with a turn off and on again.

I never really got to the bottom on it, never had a dealer succesfully replicate it when in their workshops ( 3 different ones with good reps). I now presume it's fueling related in colder weather and the auto choke doing something odd that goes away when it restarts and get's a different reading, but I could still have a slightly faulty sensor that's below diagnosis thresholds.

  9. Hi Messes, thanks for the message, it sounds exactly like my bike, however there was a more pressing issue.
I found out on the first proper ride that the there was a cooling and coolant loss issue where it would loose coolant but no evidence of pool of coolant under the bike. it is the era of the famous cylinder head issue and took it to the top guys at Luigi Moto and they found out that the coolant had been diluted (so the previous owner knew there was a problem) to the point it didn’t have enough cooling properties and that without a big strip down would not be able to find the issue as the cooling system was not pressurising confirming the leak into the engine be it head gaskets, heads or barrels.
with this information I was able to get the garage to take it back with a full refund (waiting for them to collect the bike) and in the mean time bought another MTS from the son of another member on here who owned the bike from new, the white 2015 S that was for sale on here. Blown away by the condition and value of the bike with a comprehensive Ducati SH.

  10. Yeah, that is a bit more serious. It was a know issue on the older bikes, but resolved by 2013. I can at least say that Luigi Moto rebuilt my engine while that problem was present before and after so it's not a fault in the engine. Glad you hear you've got a superior replacement.
