A good proportion of riders are faster on bikes with less power. Personally weight and agility are more important than power for a bike that’s fun to ride. The Multi is a great distance bike with a playful side to it but it’s big and heavy. There is a reason race bikes are as light as possible.
Since when does anyone need the appropriate riding skills to justify the purchase of any bike? Forums always seem to have a few members that are disparaging towards those that spend a lot of money on a bike and ride it slowly. So what? It’s their money and their choice on how they ride it. There’s a fella not far from me that has two of every notable Ducati from the last 20 years. One for riding, the other still in its crate. I’ve seen him out and he’s best described as steady. Last year on a track day at Donington there was an SP2 in the slow group, full Dainese airbag leathers, the lot. Not fast. Me? I’m shit slow, hung like a chocolate mouse and crap at my job. Who is anyone to judge? Live and let live. See you out there! As long as it’s not raining.
I think Ducati have missed a trick here. Having the same power as a regular V4 with a racing system, shorter service intervals, less mpg, less torque, power delivered higher up the rev range, and not many stand out differences (other than the paint), they’ve kind of shot themselves in the foot. Most PP owners that were thinking of changing, including me, will probably hang fire. If they’d have actually fitted the Streetfighter engine, metal tank, loads of carbon, and made it look more special, they’d have a lot more orders. I wonder why they didn’t go all out on this model. Shame.
The more I look at it, the more I like it However the performance gains are questionable for on the road riding I feel, track maybe..? But the extra ££££ for a splash of carbon and a nice paint job, make me feel my PP is the better option, for me anyway..
Isn't it the streetfighter engine albeit de-tuned for whatever reason? What I want to know is how Ducati de-tuned it?
I’ve had my PP for 18 months and still love just looking at it in the garage. IMO it looks a lot more special than the RS.
Apparently. They’ve de-tuned it, and increased the running costs over a regular V4, but only given it a tiny bit more power, and less torque. Seems very strange.
The reality is they have turned a Multistrada into a 'not really a Multistrada'. The whole concept and design of the bike is not really for a 200bhp+ engine. There will come a point where its height and weight will make it unstable when pushed hard.
The metal tank and full SF-power is reserved for the eventual Multi V4R to compete against the eventual M1000XR Competition. Ducati isn’t dont milking the collectors yet.
There’s bound to be a final addition at some point. Probably named v4Q (as they’re naming their creations after Audi cars)
Possibly by changing the camshafts just as they did in the engine that goes into the PP versus that which is in the V4S. Maybe they don’t want to get too close to the full power output as it’s configured in the Pani & SF so as to still leave some bragging rights to those customers ?
@Steelboss No offence taken (currently riding the 1250..) but it will be interesting to see if BMW bring out a real HP or M version. The GS is now shorter than a Multistrada and nothing to argue over either way for wet weight. The direction Ducati have gone in recent years with the Multi has resulted in a very large bike, for something that started off very compact and nimble. Personally, I would like to see a fully upgraded 950, 17” wheels, Ohlins, Marchesini…much more suited the roads I have available. € 37.5k for the V4rs here best get a lotto ticket. Seems the order of the day that manufacturers just keep throwing tech (and bigger cat converters) at motorcycles. Incredible that I bought a brand new FZ1s import for £6200 otr in 2008, barely covers the cost of an exhust system for some of the bikes now.
What makes you say it’s not a full system ? If I’m reading the assembly instructions correctly, the Pre Silencer (catalytic converter ?) and short adaptor pipes for the headers are replaced with a Resonance Box and new adaptor pipes. Andy
