Tapping Swingarm For Paddock Stand Bobbins

  1. Has anyone done it? In to the cast part. I was thinking of using a steel thread insert, finishing at M8 rather than have the bobbins fastened directly in to the swingarm if you see what I mean.

  2. Are you suggesting a time sert or similar? That's a strong part of the swingarm, near the weld

  3. Yes, but it occurred that might be overkill (as you may be suggesting), so was keen to hear how others had gotten on. Since posting I’ve been on the DSC page - last logged on in 2011 - and someone there had tapped M8 directly in to the swingarm and seemed happy with it.

  4. We welded them on

  7. I'd go with welding, if drilling/tapping or thread insert then it's only into the (thin) wall of the box section. In time it may 'oval' the holes and it will weaken the arm.

Welded is the way to go, as per Monster/851/888 and the above pic etc.

It also adds a little crash protection should the bike end up on it's side.

  8. Where I’ve indicated is still in to the casting, before it becomes ‘just’ box section

  9. OK but, personally I'd still weld them on. Drilling/tapping is taking material/strength away from the arm.

Having recently suffered a cracked swingarm on my Monster, I'd not be compromising it in any way - welding on is adding something rather than weakening IMHO.
