I'm looking for a set of piston rings for my 1998 900SS (carb model). Can someone please tell me where to get these in the UK?
Why not just get aftermarket pistons? An excuse to get high comps! If you want OE fitment rings, I know from experience they are quite tricky to get. Edit....get them here https://www.stein-dinse.com/en/item-1-1146240.html
I was going to say the same thing - after farting about for months searching for & then fitting rings for an old bevel they didn't help at all... new pistons/rings/rebore and it was all sorted in a trice. I used Omega pistons although I'm not entirely sure they do replacements for the later SS.
Thanks, the Stein Dinse link is very helpful - I could only find a different set for 212 Euros per piston, which would have made the JE's cost-effective. The '944 route' - that's an overbore to 94mm, to take the capacity out to 944cc?
I needed new rings for my Monster 944cc JE pistons (the original JE were incompatible with the nikasil bores so beware if buying them). Got them from CP Carillo, they can supply rings to fit pretty much anything, you only need the dimensions and at a fraction of the price of Ducati parts IIRC the full set (both pistons) were around £70 - £80, 4 or 5 years back. Going back maybe 15 years, I bought some OEM Ducati rings for my 916 and they were around £200 a piston.
The alternative route to 944 is to source a set of ST2 barrels and pistons and convert them from water cooled to oil cooled There is a YouTube article on this, I think it’s ‘water into oil’ by Andy’s motorcycle obsessions. It’s basically one small drilling from the oil passageway into the water jacket then blanking off the waterway to the heads with core plugs It looks more involved than it actually is
I'm tempted by the high-comp pistons but I want to keep everything as standard as possible. I've orded some rings and gaskets from Stein Dinse. Thank you everyone for your help, it is much appreciated.
