Heating Oil Transfer

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wally, Nov 1, 2023.

  1. I am looking for a way to transfer about 200 litres of domestic heating oil from one tank to another. The tanks are about 5 meters apart. This will be a one off event so I don't want to invest much in the project. Anyone got any experience of this and can recommend a cheap and cheerful transfer pump or other solution?

  2. I saw that but one of the reviewers used it to pump 500l of heating oil with no issue. I don't mind if the pump get knackered by the job but I don't want to die in a ball of fire. Hmmm.

  3. Heating oil has a relatively high flashpoint. so unlikely to be an issue, but Caveat emptor ! A simple pump like this is probably ok to use... remember when it gets cold it will be MUCH MUCH harder to pump the fluid. Concerns/ risks to manage would be overloading the drill / power point. Creating sparks off the drill unit itself (very common on powerful drills if you watch the motor!) or fire risk, from overloaded cable etc... Drill will have to be pretty meaty I think to move 200 litres.... I think I would probably take the risk... but don't leave it running un-watched and keep something handy to put it out if it does go up ! more I write the less I want anything to do with it lol

  8. If you do a bit of googling I think you’ll find that is the legal way to do it…

  9. I've never really been much for cooking in tin foil but hey ho!

  10. If the pump can handle water ,it should easily cope with heating oil as the oil is much less viscous than water .

  14. Is a old tank outlet high enough off the ground to get a decent sized container under it?

Usually there’s a valve outlet that you can disconnect a pipe from.

If so just use something like a 25 litre plastic can and transfer it over manually.

200 litres is only 8 cans. Cheapest method for a one off.

  15. If a top fueller is sitting on the start line and only begins it's run when another car that is travelling at a steady 100 mph crosses the same line, it will beat it over the quarter mile.

  16. I could possibly use your idea but with a siphon to fill the container. I think that would work. Avoiding any spillage would then be my main concern.
