hello there British brothers , how are things going in beautiful Britain ? , i know that you have had a bad storm over there but even northern italy was battered by the same storm too . As far as the bike is concerned i brought my 748 to make the usual maintenance and the mechanic has discovered a small miniscule crack in the left side crankcased of the engine arguably caused by the chain , well my question is , will the substitution of the left crankcase mean that the number of the engine will go with it or the number of the engine is in a separate part of the engine basement ? cheers to everybody ciao !
You'll find that the crankcase halves are a matched pair, meaning you'll need to replace both if you replace one. If it's not too bad a crack it should be repairable by welding but you'll need to strip it down to do the job properly. And fit a case saver, it may save your case.
well , i'm afraid at the moment nope because the bike is in the workshop but i look forward to get there to see how things are going on the matter . my concern is that the engine number should remain there in order ro re register the bike here , if i remember well the number of the engine is lower from the crankcase tho'
only reason I asked was just to confirm it was crankcase and not the removable "crankcase cap" and also to try and help determine if Tig welding in situ was/is an option. Of course ideally, a full strip is the only sure way to get the job done properly but it's not always essential, depending how ragged/ how bad the fracture damage is, and how important the finished appearance is to you, etc.
