I'm guessing any of the 2000's ish 17x5.5" 5-spoke/snowflake wheels - 749/999/ST/1000DS - are a straight drop in to a '97 900SS albeit with maybe a sleeve to sort mismatched spindle sizes. Can anyone confirm? (I'm conscious my profile pic shows a 5-spoke in an SS, but it's not a standard swingarm. And I did it a long time ago)
Good question, I think the ST rear has a bigger spine from memory. I got OZ wheels and they were for an SS ie. The rear was drop in. The front needed a spindle and speedo change. Not heard of the swap you are suggesting. Is this for Superspurt?
Only drop in option are rear wheels from SSie . ST or 999 rears are all larger axles and possibly different sprocket offset. All 2000 era fronts are larger axles and needs ferkling to fit
Superspurt is finished (well, was finished 10 years ago...) and has been doing all the miles this year. That's it in the profile pic. I should re-read my own thread to see what I used then. No, I'm on to 'Son of Superspurt' , I like the look of the snowflake 749/999 rear but it's a bit of an investment if it won't fit. I could always sell on I suppose. Front of SuperSpurt is 1098 forks, 748 wheel, and 900SS Speedo drive internals. Hurray for having a lathe. Oh, and that left some weird disc offset to deal with. I think 748R did the trick. I've learned my lesson regards posting a project in real time, but this one is only on the teardown stage. I must remember to take some pics. Just messaged @DesmoDog regarding his battery box, it's the perfect solution to where to put all the gubbins that hangs off the front subframe, it can go on a plate in front of the carbs and everything else hangs off his battery box. Any more comments on the wheel compatibility are welcome. Project Thread in the spring. 2024. Maybe.
Thanks. I can deal with a bit of ferkling Axle would be no problem, sprocket offset.. well depends on what direction it's to go. Out is good, in is bad.
It think it’s outward and it may be a diff front sprocket on ST engines compared to 900/1000SsIe ones. I did ponder trying to fit 5 spoke ST rims to my 900sl a long time ago but realised it was more than just bearing swaps to achieve it, if I wanted to keep original front forks and front /rear axle diameter’s.
Having seen Superspurt in the flesh it's an awesome machine. Remember I bought those wheels and discs off you way back Lindsay? Superspurt was a bit of influence on my own build. I'd be very interested to see the next one
These 5 spoke Marchesini's came off a 800ss ie. Rear is straight fit(17mm axle) but the front I had to make sleeves to adapt the wheel to fit 1993 model forks. If you have a lathe all do-able at a home workshop.
I seem to recall reading, on another forum that 999 type wheels are wider at the hub to allow for a wider sprocket offset, in turn allowing for wider tyres meaning they don't fit in the swingarm of an SS? I think SS swingarms are (like Monster/888 etc.) narrower. I know my Monster arm is quite narrow and doesn't leave much clearance for the chain between both the arm and the tyre edge. The chain runs very close to the edge of the tyre, I tried a 180 rear on it and it was 'bouncing' off the tyre, a 170 is a better fit but still closer to the chain than my 916 with a 180 rear.
