Hi All, I'm new to the forum having recently bought a monster, as it's been far too long without two wheels (42 years!) Loving the bike, but now the winter is drawing in I'm tidying up some bits and pieces. The exhaust studs and nuts on the lower cylinder are looking somewhat crispy, so I'd like to renew them. Has anyone done this successfully without snapping and having to helicoil. Any advise very much appreciated. Thanks, Steve.
For every one person who has had a mare, you’ll get one who has never had an issue. It’s the way of life. All you can do is have patience and spend time preparing to take the nuts off. Soaking in plus gas or some other reputable brand to tackle potential seizing metals. Sometimes applying heat and allowing to cool so the expansion and contraction breaks the corrosion bond works. Sometimes trying to tighten the nut before releasing can work. Just take your time and in the long run, if it snaps, it’s usually repairable. Andy
Here are some traditional methods ..... How to Remove Studs - 4 Different Ways - and then there's a more modern way , using induction heating to give sudden "heat shock" ..... much less brute force needed ( but the tool is pricey for a one-off job ) https://autotechnician.co.uk/a-safe-and-fast-way-to-loosen-a-rusted-or-corroded- suspension-bolt-with-induction-heat/
Mig weld a nut on the end...the heat will "break" the resistance and you have a nut to easily undo the stud!
