For Sale Ducati Racing Rev Counter Tacho 748 996

  1. I brought this Tacho recently from Ebay as it was local to me and I wanted to see if I could get it to work with my M900.

I made up the patch cable to use the feed to one ignitor, and it did exactly what I’d been told it would do - It cuts out that cylinder and the needle just fidgets about just off it’s stop.

So having abandoned my attempt, but learnt something, it needs a more deserving home.

The story I was told when I collected it, is that because of the scratch on the front face(Visible in the images) it had been swapped out by Moto Rapido when the seller collected their 996.

    Anyone fancy it for £40?

I’m happy to post it for an extra £5, or it can be collected from Clanfield Hants during the weekends and evenings, or Havant, Hants during normal(ish) working hours.

£25 inc Postage would reduce my losses on it to a more acceptable level?

It surprised me too as I thought it would work.

To give some more detail, I made up a patch cable using male and female 3 way connectors to fit between the original male plug and female socket of the vertical cylinder Ignitor box.

Tee’d off this were three spurs for the +ve, -ve and signal to the Revcounter, in exactly the same way as the optional extra Ducati Performance revcounter was wired in when they were available for the early Monster.
I had one a couple of years ago and copied the wiring, but didn’t like the huge GCSE project look of the housing, so sold it.

I also managed to blag a look at a wiring loom from a couple of bikes fitted with this type of 996 revcounter, so am confident I got the +ve, -ve, and signal wires the right way around at the revcounter.

Without the connection made at the revcounter the bike ran fine, so the patch cable in that respect was proven.
With the connection made at the revcounter end, the vertical cylinder dropped out, and the revcounter bounced up and down off it’s stop pin about a mm or two.

My thought is that the signal from the ECU on the newer bikes is obviously completely independent from the ignition signal, as it’s a wire direct from the ECU to the revcounter.

I was trying to use the original signal on the monster to do both jobs, it’s probably not powerful enough, and the Revcounter circuit is probably short-circuiting the Ignitor.

The original Ducati Performance Revcounter I had for the Monster was particularly unstable, flapping about a bit and taking a few moments to settle down at constant revs.
I’d imagine it was drawing less power, working from a much weaker signal, and had a weaker return spring.
It’s not difficult of course to devise a circuit to amplify the signal, but I just don’t want to add the complexity to my simple old monster.

BUT!! I’ve just had a thought, I wonder if short-circuiting the Ignitor power supply is the key, and all I need to do is power the revcounter from elsewhere.

Chizel, sorry, I’ll get back to you.

  5. £25 posted is a bargain, @chizel will rip your arm off ( as would I if I didn't have two spares all ready).
Re: pick-up, that's why I mentioned the coil take off? I would definitely have tried it there before giving up. As you say though, there is a delicacy about the whole Kokusan ignition system, so perhaps taking a line off there would still upset the exciter.

  6. I'd chizel doesn't want it, I'll have it and I'll even throw in a bag of Quavers on top.

  7. It's the fact that the cylinder isn't getting a spark that's got me thinking.
It's often the way, when you've written it down and read it back through the answer jumps out at you.

It might be that the ignitor is being shorted out by the revcounter, which would also explain the revcounter not working.

Really Sorry Chizel, I'll have to try again before letting it go.

I was surprised nobody wanted it earlier, as I believe the one with Ducati Racing printed on the face is quite rare compared to the one with Ducati Corse on it.

  8. no probs mate. Mines not working but it may well be the driver in the ecu. I'm getting my clocks referbed at some point with new glass and white faces. Just thought it would be handy for me to swap and see if it's my counter or ecu. And a good spare but if you can use it or someone offers you more all good!

  9. So I’ve had a play over the weekend.

I tried just disconnecting the signal cable from the back of the revcounter and the vertical cylinder kicked back in, so it would appear the revcounter power feed is not shorting out the ignitor power feed.

To be sure tried taking the power supply for the revcounter direct from the battery, and the vertical cylinder still cut out when the signal wire was connected.

So at this point it looks like signal strength or the revcounter is shorting the signal back to earth.

I then tried taking the signal from the permanent live side of the coil instead of the switched side.
The 7.5A ignition fuse blew the moment I turned the ignition on.

So at this stage I can’t be sure if the revcounter itself isn’t actually bu99ered.

I’m going to try one last thing, I’ll borrow an Oscilloscope from work to see exactly what signal the ignitor is receiving, and try putting together a little circuit to supply a separate signal to the revcounter. If I can’t design the circuit I’ve some very clever electronics design engineers at work who will knock it up in 10mins just to show me up.

  10. Sounds like there's a short from signal to earth inside the rev counter.

  11. Could it be a Strada or SPS one designed for the P8 ECU?

  12. just wondering if the rev counter is still available? My 916 is in need.

  19. Sorry, it took me a couple of days to get to my storage container.

In fact I do still have it.

If you want to purchase it please PM me, but do make sure you read the thread.
I brought it in good faith, but have never seen it working.
