Bit nippy in the shed this morning but have made a start on fitting the new fuel pump, Crimped + bit of solder for the ring connectors, Brought 8mm pipe which is a good fit on the pump/ fuel filter but when pushing it onto the internal tank fuel pipe there is no resistance it’s just a simple push/pull it off as internal fuel pipe is smaller in diameter, when clamped it holds tight but I would prefer some resistance before clamping, old pipe has good resistance before clamping I will have a look for 6mm pipe next and go from there, Edit, Just been on the phone to Motorapido as i found that the two rubber fuel pump hoses have different part numbers and ordered the one that i need as i assume its to allow for the different size internal metal pipe, they come in packs of six so i have spares, £6.30 per pack.
Now it’s warmed up a bit in the shed and the rubber hose I needed from Motorapido is here, i finished off the fuel pump and cap, Every item has been renewed, The hoses only come in a packet of 5 and with post came to £9.
Next job was O ring and cap rubber, I used a bit of masking tape and a pen mark so I could keep it all lined up every time I had to take the cap base out and reposition the rubber seal, I found it not a hard job just a fiddle to get it to sit right, every time I thought it was position correct i noticed it was just not right on one side, eventually I got it spot on and started to fit the grubs screws then remembered I forgot to fit the drain pipe to the underside of the cap base so at that point I went and made a cuppa and had another go, I found after a lot of attempts the seal was easier to use, now all fitted The hose had well and truly split.
If I may, you should try and give your gas cap a nice 0000 steel wool friction. You’ll be amazed how easy it will get you rid of all these surface stains and how nice and shiny the cap will be after that.
Rag in the cap base and Hoover pipe to catch any bits, I only went lightly over the cap as paint was quite solid which did remove the stains/dirt, cap base paint came off very easy then a bit of polishing, looks much better. ( I didn’t do the gold cap as it would take that paint off)
Very rewarding 5 minutes, ain’t it? I am positive you could apply the same method on the gold finish, as 0000 wouldn’t be enough to « scuff » the clear coat before a respray (we use scotchbrite for that). You can also do it to the bottom portion of your gas cap and on the circular lined portion. Just be very gentle and see how that goes.
Added some fuel after fitting the new pump to check any melting/smoking red wires in the fuse box. This time i remembered to turn the fuel tap on had it running for 15 mins and can report there was no smoking or melting wires they didn't even get hot which is the first time they haven't previously after around 4 mins they would start to smoke. As Chris mentioned above, sticky pump and combined with a split hose didn't help.
Thought I would have a go at the Cush rubbers today, so a bit of searching and good to go, One pulled the Centre sleeve out so cut the outer sleeve out, The next five came out easy, I found once they are under tension the threaded bar would spin with every spanner turn which is doing nothing so then used a heat gun for a couple of minutes and as they are under tension and heated up you can hear them go pop, nice and easy and no damage.
Went and picked these up locally today From a super light mk1 to replace the low exhausts I have on there now, Just need a pair of hangers now.
Thanks Jon Good to know they are available still been searching and found a chap called Steve, BBB fabrications ? who used to make them but he doesn't seem to be around anymore, think i will try secondhand first.
Had a mate do a bit of work on the hangers and as they have a powder coater i had them satin black which will look good against a white frame, hanger parts arrived from Motorapido so had a trial fit before strip down.
