Just read an advert where it states that whilst the Speedo on the bike (2001 748R) is MPh, it was common for the ODO to be KPH. Is this correct?
Has the speedo dial been converted to show MPH but actually everything is still set to KPH? Was a discussion here https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/speedo-mph-convertion.44146/
TBH I don’t know Chris. Seller is saying it’s common to have an ODO is KPH but Speedo in MPH, and it was not uncommon for 748s. I’m dubious and think it’s a euro bike with a sticker on the Speedo. But oddly it’s got a UK service history from new. Maybe a grey import?
The only thing I can think of is that a previous owner has put an MPH sticker on a KPH clock, but if it’s been in the UK all it’s life, why did it have a kph clock in the first place. Fishy…..
This is on a 1998 ST2. As you can see the speedo displays both mph and Kmh but the odo is clearly marked on both the total and the trip counters as Km. I post this just to show what was being used in the late 90s/early 00s on bikes. However afaik something like the 748R of that era for the UK market would have had a dial like the one on the right below as standard. The dial on the left is a standard Kmh EU one.
FWIW I've not seen a 748 with Odo in KPH and speedo in Mph, there were non Ducati dealers selling 'unofficial' 748's that were imports with KPH speedos.
Saw that and my first thought was, absolute bollocks. If it is a genuine UK model, at the very worst, it would have come with a KPH/Km speedo fitted with the MPH/Mikes speedo in a box with the bike for the dealer to fit. If my memory serves me well, that practice had ended well before the 2001 mk2 748R. FWIW, my verified, UK spec 2001 mk2 748R has an MPH/Miles clock. Andy
It's certainly not common. It's quite easy to change the dial and I bet you'd see the signs of the instrument being opened if you had it in your hand.
