Doh - cr*ppy gear change!

  1. Guilty of shite up shift today - found a false neutral (4-5) I think it was. What's best to do then - slow right down with clutch pulled in and then go all way done the box, or kick back down straight away or push up again. I did the the latter (gently) and was rewarded with a bolloxed gear shift. Advice appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.

  2. I've found it doesn't matter, although generally I've had falsies going up rather than down... It's a bastard when going into a corner at speed though...

  3. It's even more of a bastard when the thing drops in of its own accord once the motor has hit about 8 or 9 thousand in neutral, the back wheel locks and highsides you.

And yes, I do know about this from personal experience.

  4. Ooops!

  5. That don't sound fun!
So poss pull in clutch, slow down some and then go up or down as suits?

  6. I am not sure what you mean by up or down, however, I was taught to alway move into a higher number gear i.e. if the false neutral happens going from 2 -3 make the same change as if going from 2-3. Does that make sense?

  9. I have always changed up if I miss a gear but let the revs drop a little and then the take up should be OK.

  10. I can't believe all these people getting false neutrals. I've never had one in my life.

    Yet

  11. Yep. Thanks.

  12. Must try harder

  13. I only get them if I halfheartedly change down, so its me not the bike. (mainly down from from 4th to 3rd) Just need to give the lever a good positive prod, not brush it with your foot

  14. Completely agree with this... Used to get some falsies on my old R6 track bike when treating the gear lever like a pussy!... Not good when going into redgate like a crazed loon!

  15. Thank fuck for this thread! I have had a couple of "falsies" between 5th and 6th, but assumed I has screwed up (I may have done). I actually pulled over and started again. Thanks for the info and advice guys.

  16. You did.

But when you think of how many gear changes you make, you're statistically bound to make mistakes. Unless you're El Toro. But there's always one lottery winner.
