V4 Zumo Xt2 Connection To The V4 Rally

  1. Before swapping my much loved 1290 SAS for a '23 V4 Rally, I removed the Garmin mount and cabling for my Zumo XT2. Locating the Nav1/2 cables behind the headlight was a headache but connecting the Zumo was straightforward and all worked well.
    Finding the "Nav" cable on the V4 Rally was straightforward, but for some reason, and I've heard many, connecting the Garmin cradle and wiring to the bike's Nav cable doesn't work. Sportsbikeshop have told me that the cabling they supplied with the GPS unit is the correct one and that the cabling with the box (step down transformer?) isn't required for the V4 Rally. They added that there would be no problems in connecting the XT2 directly to the battery but this would of course require a fuel tank off operation which I'd like to avoid if at all possible.
    Has anybody else encountered this problem when installing an XT2 GPS to a V4 Rally?
     
  2. I’m just in the process of installing an XT2 to my Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak and I can’t see any reason why the Rally would be any different. The XT2 runs off 12V to 30V, unlike its predecessors which ran off 5V. The Multistrada’s white, switched live, Nav socket should be just a straight fit. I have been told the XT2 will work off a 5V power supply but it won’t charge whilst in use. The only reason I definitely know for the white socket, switched live, Nav feed on the Multistrada not working, is the positive and negative wires from the Sat Nav have been connected the wrong way round. That is what happened when I fitted an XT on my Multistrada 1200. Andy

  3. I found the white "NAV" socket/connector, stripped the hard resinous covering off the +ve and -ve tails and connected them to the corresponding wires from the Garmin cradle - but nothing! The bike was due the 600mile service so I asked the dealership to check wires for continuity but they found no fault and couldn't give me a plausible reason for the fault. I have since spoken to Sportsbikeshop as mentioned above. I'd be interested in knowing how your installation goes but in the meantime, I've ordered another NAV connector in case the original one was damaged during the process of stripping off the hard protective cover.
     
  4. To strip the hard plastic off just put the ends in boiling water for a minute or two and they pull off.

  5. In hindsight, that's what I should have done. Since my first post, I've checked the electrical connections with the Multimeter and discovered the problem - a discontinuity in the tail with that hard plastic covering; the rest of the circuitry is fine and a replacement "tail" has been ordered and is on the way.
    I'll post the results in a couple of days time.

  6. Installed the wiring for my XT2 and happy to report it works. Used a DVM to sort out which of the two black wires was +ve and -ve but not rocket science. The only dilemma was to cut the Zumo wiring loom to size or find somewhere to lose the excess. In the end, I just wound the excess around the back of the bike’s head unit. Not pretty but functional.   7. I received and fitted a new NAV tail today. Happy to report that it's now working. I guess that stripping the hard plastic off the tail damaged it. :upyeah:

  8. For those that have fitted the Zumo XT2 on the V4, did you shorten the stock Garmin power lead? It's way too long to wrap up under the screen. Interested to knopw how you have managed the wiring. Pics would be great.

  9. I just wound the excess round the back of the dash. My thought process was, shortening the cable to size would mean I’d have to buy another cable when I sell the unit on. Andy

  10. How did you route the cable from the sat nav holder above the dash. It can be tucked behind the dash but then you lose the tilt functionon the dash. There is also excess slack when the screen is in lower position. Might have to play with it a bit more until I find a solution without too much of a compromise.
     
  11. I tucked mine under the right hand side cover. I put a 3M cable tie mount on the inside of the side panel, and cable tied the excess to the side panel. Fits fine and all nice and tidy.

  12. Yes. I measured up sufficient length and cut off the surplus. All connections were shrink wrapped.

  15. Hi @Mubarak, the satnav mount I bought is here, https://iconicparts.uk/shop/ols/products/multistrada-v4-v4s-device-mount, please note, order with the off-road metal mounts. To answer your first question, 2 things to note. If you use the supplied plug with the wires wrapped in heat shrink, be very careful how you remove it so you don’t cut or stretch the wires and both wires are coloured black so you will need a digital volt meter to check which is +ve and which is -ve.   17. @Android853sp Sorry to bother again - which display size XT2 are you using; 5.5" or 6" for MTS V4 Pikes Peak. If I want to pick the 6" display, possible to fit in right.
     
  18. I have just fitted an XT using an iconic mount, plenty of room so don't think either size will be a problem.
     
  19. @Mubarak, in the UK, the 5.5” screen is called the XT and the 6” screen is called the XT2. A word of caution, Basecamp, the Garmin PC based map utility, does not support the XT2, you need to use the mobile phone/tablet based Tread App. I initially found learning to use Tread a challenge but I got the hang of it.
