Having had a recent off I was very thankful for all the protection I had which saved me many more injuries suffering only two broken wrists. I would reccommend to anyone riding to buy the best kit they can afford on their budget. One day it might just pay off, granted if you never fall off which is the plan, it would appear a waste of money but having seen the effects of the shorts and t-shirt bridgade first hand its worth it.
This is my experience i broke my back december 2012. L1 smashed into T12 i'm 8mm shorter now ! fell off a ladder only 8 foot In the air, in a spinal case for 9 bloody weeks i was riding a S1000rr then fed up of my 1098 braking down all the time !!!! So i bought a Aprillia Dorsoduro sm style straighter bars etc, set about making it go quicker... gearing, Arrows pipes, quick action thottle. So last sat i bought a new dainese back protector... sunday morning i gave it a handful coming off a island cold tyres my fault landed on my ASS dread to think what would of happened if i had'nt been wearing it. Just my pennys worth.
me too, I wear mine all the time now, best back protector I have owned....and crash tested it too so I know it works lol
I had a under 60mph crash and the bike landed on my back, I walked away with a chipped bone in my shoulder. If I hadnt got my boil in the bag leathers and my back protector on Im sure the 198kg weight landing on my back would have done more damage.
+1 to that. Been Wearing back protectors since my first bike (GSX-R600) wouldn't dream of riding without one. Had a big highside a few years ago ended up with a fracture dislocation to the right tib and fib after striking the floor feet first, then slid along the road for a good way on my back. Not a mark on my back when i was being checked for any other injuries once i was in hospital.
There'e another advantage to back protectors: Bearing in mind the limited options for carrying luggage on Ducatis (Multis and STs excluded) you end up frequently with a rucksack. The back protector spreads the load when you're stretched out over the tank making it more comfortable to carry more crap. Boyfriends should be required to provide GFs with a back protector for this purpose, seeing how they always end up with the rucksack.
Buy a Forcefield one. Far from being uncomfortable, they actually add to the comfort once warm. Tested it twice now and had no back bruising at all.
I think the ride out you refer too could have been the one i was on, the rider was only wearing textiles and the off was indeed at low speed, it all depends how you land. The rider sustained serious injuries but is now gladly on the mend. He was not wearing any back protection and at the time it was stated that if only he had. I do not get on the bike without wearing a Forcefield back protector MHO
Came off at Rockinham, low side at about 50 or so, bruised elbow and knee. Leathers well scuffed as I rolled 5 times or so into the gravel. Not a mark on my back, no bruising, scrapes or broken bits. I never ride without one. Duke.
Had an off at Christmas time just outside Alton on the A32. Skated down the road/kerb on my backside/back. Forcefield back protector meant that I had no injuries. Obviously won't do much if you slam into a lamppost at 80 mph. I've just started wearing a chest protector as I quite value my ribs - once they get warm they get soft and you don't notice they're on.
I've worn a back protector for about ten years now and it's just like second nature wearing one now. However I've recently been thinking about one of these gilet types that have chest protection too. Has anyone got/tried them? If so what are they like?
I have a couple of Dainese 2 pieces. The earlier Fluid has a pocket in the jacket for the smaller Bap back protector. The later Flanker doesn't. So most of the time it's the Fluid that gets the nod even if, being black, it makes me invisible. Visiting castles (for instance) in all your clobber is a pain. Having the back protector in the jacket is one less thing to cart about.
Ah now I know what the dots are on the front on my jacket I must have rolled/slid over cats eyes I only had the back protector supplied in jacket at time of my off.
