  1. And yet all our politicos always show themselves with flags around their desks.. So presumably they are doing this because they think it makes them popular with the public?

Which should mean the public likes the flag waving?

  4. You do talk some rubbish sometimes.

The reason the Union Jack and especially the St George flag have got that label is precisely because they HAVE been used by far right wing groups to promote their own brand of racism.
In many countries the flag of that nation is only allowed to be used in certain places, by certain people and at certain times. Maybe if the UK made the same laws the flag would not have become the symbol of right wing nob jockeys and their groups.

  6. My memory takes that attitude as being associated with right wing football hooligan groups in the 90's.
Occasions such as the 2012 olympics, milestone events in the royal family have done a lot for bringing the st George or Union flags back into symbols of public identity. I for one would have no qualms about flying either, whereas I would have had 25 years ago.

I still beleive though that this country has been fucked over by the ruling political class of the last 15 years or more and am considering my options abroad.

  7. It can be called a Union flag or Jack not withstanding where it is flown.

  10. Funny that I’m spouting rubbish yet then it’s said it’s used by racists. You just can’t use facts with some. Anyway….

Imho the answer is to stop making kids go to Uni and waste their time and money. Instead build real apprenticeships in real engineering and manufacturing companies in UK and suitable incentives to build here. Get the stigma of manual work that seems to have grown in recent years away. Alas with more AI type activity those jobs are more at risk than ever.

Live local. Work local. Shop local. Up the Union :fist:

  11. It will be some obscure place no one has heard of and simply what the poster believes rather than reality.

  12. I once owned a Mini Metro and it was the biggest heap of rusty shit I’d ever had the misfortune to drive… that said the Morris Marina was almost as bad

  13. But too be fare you could say that for any Italian or French car from that era as well.

  14. True, I also owned a Lancia Delta in the 80's and the gearbox exploded and later the dashboard caught fire!

  16. This is all too true, I left the UK years bavk. Just didn't see it ever turning around and haven't looked back since. My friends (who are in the UK) also tell me how it's becoming more americanised. Considering I lived in the US... I'd want the exact opposite.

This is so odd, I now live in Netherlands where flags are proudly flown. I fly the Dutch flag on certain days to join in celebrations or fly the GB flag for something similarly. We've only ever gotten a good response from our neighbours and locals.

The UK to me is no longer home, an extreme view yes, I miss it dearly. But would I ever earn my salary there again? No. It's a place of visit to me, not home.

  17. I don’t think you’re alone on those views. I’d happily move somewhere warm. If I’m going to be taxed to death I may as well have some warmth on my skin while I’m doing it. In my travels in France, Spain, Germany you see their national, or regional, flag flown a lot.

  18. I agree with you. Unfortunately engineering and manufacturing was purposely decimated by Thatcher in favour of the service industry.

Her legacy is one of destruction and being the architect of the shitshow we currently have in the UK.
