748 Hazy Headlight Challenge

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by Dannyduke, Dec 28, 2023.

  1. Hey,
Probaly been done to death by now, but, just in case a newbie like me comes along and needs some help here’s what I’ve learnt so far been a Ducati owner…

If you got hazy headlight this worked for me…

WD40 and a decent soft bristle thin brush down the bulb sockets. It worked well for me and cleaned up quite nicely. Much care was taken with removal of projection glass. I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect BUT much better that’s for sure.

  4. I cleaned my 888 headlight a few weeks ago (and my 916 needs the same treatment). What I did was to roll a small magnet into small piece of steel wool, and drop it into the headlight along with a some spray of detergent. Using a second magnet on the outside, it was quite easy then to clean the inside of the headlight, and the coarse steel wool (the dishwashing kind) didn't mark the glass at all. Rinsed it all out with more detergents and solvents, then put the headlight in a warm cupboard for a couple of days to fully dry out.

  5. If only you had made a video……. :p

  6. The old fashioned way was to pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into the unit and shake. Within 10 seconds they were clear again and any liquid remaining would quickly evaporate.

  7. Rubbing alcohol?

We need to know more about this please :bucktooth:

  8. Not much to really say but it was quick and effective and the foggy#1 headlight never reappeared. Headlight out > pour 20ml or so into the headlight - swish it around and the results are instant. With New Year coming up, the rubbing alcohol is NOT fit for human consumption :)

Throw this into Google: rubbing alcohol Ducati headlight

  10. Bit ignorant is it not? I am all ears......afterall the forum is about sharing ideas/best practice etc. So let's hear the reasoning behind your post. Maybe you can enlighten me/others given I have used this method with much success over the years

  11. I did as you suggested and couldn’t find anyone that had success with just the alcohol on its own.

  12. you know I didn't use a word like ignorant, but I thought you might have taken the trouble to read the thread or threads that I've added to for over 10 years? not only have I cleaned 748/996/916 headlamps, but I've done the same with several Italian cars going back more like 40 years, so for somebody to come along and say you can swish something around in 10 seconds and it works just as well, well what do you think? if you have had success doing this method, then it means there was hardly any deposit on there in the first place, next time maybe try on one where it's been hanging around for so long that there's even a hint of green to it, I honestly don't believe that your method would work, but that is only my opinion.

  13. Now then, here’s a question - what causes the headlights to fog?
I have no idea myself having run 748/9*6 for nearly 20 years and never had any misty/foggy headlight issues ever.

  14. even that is in the threads, all you have to do is read them..

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  15. Was only asking.

  16. It’s the algae that sticks to the headlight due to the moisture on the glass from the hot cold cycle of lights on lights off.

I’ve not experienced it but I don’t ride at night nor did I ever run my headlights on during the day.

  17. I always rode with my lights on….in blissful ignorance of other people’s woes….

  18. I’ve been compelled to in the modern era, but given the choice I wouldn’t.
