Suicide Stand??

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Dave, Jan 3, 2024.

  1. Which Ducatis have suicide stands?
    I’ll start the list:
    996SPS (and I assume all lesser 916, 996 and 998 models) ;-)

  2. I had a 748sp and an early 996bp, both had suicide stands. My 2001 748R doesn’t. Andy

  3. 916SP3.

  4. LESSER!!!

  7. my 996sps didn't

    748 sp does

  8. Ducati does seem to have a fine history of sidestands... although not a 'true' suicide stand the one on a 1980s Darmah did allow the bike to roll off on its own accord.

  9. 1997 900ss does.
I was just thinking about this recently...you can start the 900 on the stand, if you want to move off..sidestand retracts. On the 999 you can again start on the stand, but if you put it into gear with the stand down the motor cuts out. (Non suicide stand). Seems sensible enough (in intention for both)... But the 996 won't even start with the stand down (Non suicide stand on my 2001 model)...so no chance leaving the bike to warm up on what is arguably the most needed model...

  10. I had a bypass wire made up for my 996 so it will run on the stand

  11. Sounds like a great idea, could you please me more info? Via DM if you like so not to totally derail the thread. Thx. :upyeah:

  13. My 1997 750SS does too - I assume all carb SSs did.

  14. My ‘98 916 came with and still has a suicide stand but has never had any impact on starting or running when it’s down.

  15. Has it got a side stand switch??

  16. The dealer did that for me, when I was buying my 916.

  17. my 94 900 has a normal stand and warning light on dash but no cutout, so you can set off with it down.
my 98 SPS is fitted with the spring hook bracket thing that stops it flipping up and no cutout wiring, so I always look down twice when pulling away. I think I have forgotten once in 19 years but realised before it was too late.
I did have a close shave with the non flip up stand on my Moto Martin many years ago but when I arrived at the first left hander the road was wide enough to sit up when it grounded and stop before I hit the grass. Had there been any oncoming traffic it may have been a different story...

  18. Back in the day (early ‘70’s), I sold a BSA DBD32 to a chap who left the petrol station with the side stand down, totalled the bike in a ball of flame. Andy

  19. I’ve always thought the expression “Suicide Stand” a bit alarmist, but after your experience no longer.

  20. No … and it’s never had a switch, stand just flips up when released
