1198 No Turn Signals! 2v Instead Of 12v

  1. I recently purchased a 1198. I disconnected the battery to put a sprag clutch in it when I reassemble the bike I’ve noticed that my turn signals are now not working. I have the indicators on the dash showing the turn signals are flashing, but the lights them selves do not light up.

I started simple with the fuses. Everything has 12 V at the fuse panel. What I’ve learned is each of the signals has a ground wire, and a separate wire that runs direct to the dash. Those wires are only showing 2.5V in a flash pattern. They should be 12 bolts. I’ve pulled apart my switch on the handle bar and I have 2V coming into it on the gray wire, and then power coming out from the switch to each of the sides, depending on which I select at 2V as well.

I any ideas on what would cause my dash to be sending to volts instead of 12 V to the entire turn signal circuit? any help is most appreciate.

  2. I can’t recall off the top of my head but are the indicators LED? If so LED requires a significantly reduced voltage and, iirc, about 2.5v is what’s required for yellow/amber LED illumination.

Id have to check the wiring Diag but if the indicators are powered via the dash (or the BBS for the rear ones) then the resistor that’s reducing the bike’s std 12v to the 2.5 required is built into those units.

If the indicators aren’t working then check the LEDs haven’t burned out - trying to run 12v through them will do this - and that the connection for them is seated securely.

Measure the resistance across the 2 wires that come from the indicator as well this will tell you if the LEDs are good or bad; a Google will tell you what the resistance should be.

  3. OEM indicators are not LED.

  4. The Indicators are driven from the dash. The switch grounds either the left or right wire to the dash which then sends 12V to the selected side. Each indicator has aground and a supply from the dash. If the dash light is flashing then the switch must be working so your problem is either with the dash or downstream of it, although I can't see any thing that is common to both left left and right except the earths but I'd expect the front indicators to be earthed separately from the rear.

  5. Very good chance that this is (lack of) earth-related then. Most common fault i can remember on car indicators going back many years.

  6. You are
You are correct, I realized the diagram colors are the main harness and they change once they enter the handle bar switch connector.
I have ground coming to my switch and I’ve verified ground leaving to each side depending if I select left or right. My handlebar switch is working correctly. It appears my issue is the dash not sending 12v to any of the 4 indicator wires. Does this mean the dash is faulty or could it be an issue somewhere else that’s worth checking? The front lights appear to be factory and are LED in the mirrors. The rear are aftermarket LED lights. I’ve disconnected all 4 and checked voltage to make sure it is not faulty lights but there is no change.

  7. Have you tried starting the bike and then seeing if they work? I had a weird issue with my 899 when I fitted led indicators to the rear where they wouldn’t flash but if I started the bike they worked fine .

  8. if the doesn't work check all the supplies and the ground to the dash.
