996 996 Tidy Up

  1. Well, last week, I swapped a 2009 reg GSXR750 for a 1999 996, which looked quite tidy in the pics, a few small scuffs, but, looked generally OK

It was delivered by the owner, who took away my gsxr, upon closer inspection, it is an 'afar' bike, looks good from a far, but, a far from good :joy:

  2. Quick wash on the Sunday, had a better look, found a few things that needs sorting, such as, incorrect fasteners, fasteners missing, bits modified, broken fixings, quite a number of deep scratches in the Paintwork

Most of which, are fixable by myself, the Paintwork, I may get a full aftermarket period race rep fairing kit, I will need to get a price from a paintshop to repaint the original panels, yo get a price comparison

So, to make a start, off with the panels, then take it round to the workshop, had to move my eldest boys gsxr600 track bike project from the lift table first, got the 996 most of the way there, nearly stepped in some doggy doo doo, lost my balance, and over it went, landed on its side, engine running, NOT HAPPY!!!!!

On a positive note, there were no panels on it to get damaged :upyeah:

Hit the kill switch, picked it up, got it in the workshop, eventually

Pretty patterns in the grass from the open clutch cover

And, how the bike currently looks....

  3. Luckily, the only 'damage' was to my pride, and a bit of mud to clean off, oh well, that scabby open clutch cover is going replaced anyway

When I cleaned the bike last week, I noticed that the front end of the tank was loose, and moved side to side quite a bit, diagnosis complete, the rubber grommet is missing from the front mounting point

    20240127_124145.jpg

The clocks were loose and wobbly, 2 out of the 3 rubber fixings were broken, 2 bolts were missing from the underside of the headlamp cowl, the rubber seal on the clutch cover is perished and split, and I've only got one key

A quick phonecall to Ducati Coventry, listed the 'urgent' parts required, they had them all in stock, result, nice little run out (in the car, too cold for the bike), good chat with Jason, cup of hot chocolate from their machine (very nice it was too) and the ordered parts were collected, also ordered some more that I will need

The clutch cover is NOS, bought through the bay of fleas, the other bags were from DC

Just need time to fit them now :joy:

  5. Need a paint code for the gold frame, want to try and remove the headlamp bracket, to clean up and repaint, it is looking a bit scabby

The bike will not be concourse condition, just hoping to get it cleaner and tidier than it currently is

  6. Done a bit more this morning, headlamp bracket removed, tank removed, aribox removed

Finding more things that need attention as I go along :triumph:

In the pic above, notice anything missing? Zoomed in for a closer look

    20240128_115039.jpg

Presuming that they are just an M6 flanged nut?

Looking at the airbox, that has seen better days, the good news is, the missing rubber grommet is not in the airbox or the intake trumpets

Did a bit of scrubbing on the top of the cylinder head, not perfect, but, better than it was, and it'll do for now :joy:

On a positive note, I don't need to spend money on upgrading the clutch slave cylinder to the Oberon version, it already has it fitted :upyeah:

Lunchtime, time for some bacon and egg sandwiches :)

  7. Airbox looks like it’s either been removed by a fuckwit or been down the road.
    Not sure which is worse.

  8. I think it may have been down the road at some point, based on the scraping on the water pump housing

  9. The scraping on the water pump cover sometimes is just down to the side fairing rubbing against it.
Just had my headlight bucket and supports ceraKeted by Cerakote up North. They have the correct colours in for the Ducati range.

  11. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?

And, up north you say, are they franchises? I have found one called Cerakote Customs near Leicester, about 5 miles from where I live

If you would prefer, pm me with the cost

  12. Hi and no worries…
I had the headlight bucket and supports, fan shrouds (2 on my bike) and the side stand done and came in at just under £200. The CeraKote is very good. Tough and very thin but to get it correct, you’ll have to give it a couple coats of lacquer. Mine’s the later silver colour but I’ve seen his gold parts.
Didn’t bother lacquering the side stand.

  14. I thought 996 didn’t come with the lettered heads.

  15. I believe the SPS doesn’t have lettering - that’s one of the things to look out for when buying.

  16. SPS are the ones without letters

  17. From what I have been told, and seen on the bike, this started life as a Biposto, and a previous owner converted it to monoposto

undecided at this point, whether to leave it as is, or convert it back to what it was originally

  18. My 996 is a 98 year model and no lettering. I thought early 916 bikes had the letters.

  19. It has a steel BP subframe so it’s not a pukka mono conversion, just a mono seat on the BP subframe.
