Have some tank swell on my 1098 - after moving the tank back slightly the top yolk still touches the tank before hitting the ‘stoppers’ on the frame/triple clamp. There’s no more adjustment, the steering lock engages but only with a bit of key wiggling. I presume this will be an MOT failure ? therefore I can adjust the frame/clamp lugs in the other direction which then stops the yolk touching the tank but then the steering lock will not engage. If the steering lock doesn’t engage is that an MOT failure ?
Steering lock isn’t on the MoT but the yoke hitting the tank on full lock ‘might’ be an issue depending on how strict your MoT man is. It would never happen when riding so not a safety issue.
It’s a fail for contact with the fuel tank, unless you have a forgiving MOT tester. A steering lock isn’t part of a MOT test.
Yes, or a littler rivnut over the adjuster which moves the yolk/forks away from the tank but then I can’t use the steering lock. As it stands I have about 1mm gap between the yolk and tank but no steering lock. My worry is this is an MOT failure ?
I had this once at an mot. He showed it me and I said it's a ducati, they all do it. No problem he said
Just put some longer bolts in the lock stops for the MOT. Take them out afterwards and then the steering lock will be OK. By the way... It's a yoke, not yolk as that's part of an egg.
I've watched my bikes being MOT'd numerous times, by a pretty detailed MOT guy. Never once was the bike turned, steered or manoeuvred to any extent that would or might highlight the issue you appear to have. So IMO, not, nothing to be concerned about. That said..........
On the other hand my MOT tester who is VERY realistic, fair, and understanding of modified bikes, always takes the bars from lock to lock to see if anything get's trapped or touches. From a personal point of view it's something I wouldn't put up with on a standard or modified bike.
..... yes indeed ! ..... also a key word in the wonderful Irish language , as in - " That's a handy yoke you've got there " It doesn't matter if it's a spanner or a digital torque wrench ..... it's a handy yoke .... love it I think the inspector is kind of doing the owner a favour there . Badly routed cables / wiring / hydraulics could be a serious danger ..... but just my two mongo worth ....
The full manual is here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-motorcycles It is even in reasonably understandable language which is unusual for anything on gov.uk
Wanted to give you a “useful” and “thank you” for this, but could only choose one emoji, so thank you, that is really useful
Mine fell over last year and broke the lock stop on the bottom yoke. Bike passed even though the bars could go all the way to the tank. I’ve put a new bottom yoke on since. Cheap at £370 delivered
