Bevel Square Case Lower Bevel Shimming

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Dave450, May 7, 2021.

  1. Hi guys - I am aligning the mesh of the lower bevel gears on a Darmah. What puzzles me is that the parts book does not list shims for the shafts that run in the bronze bushes in the crankcase, above the R/H main bearing. I know that rocker shims will work, and I can adjust with these to get the correct mesh. I assume those of you who are familiar with these engines have noticed shims behind the gear shafts, or have I missed something?

Here's a pic of the shaft in question:

  2. I'm sure a bevel expert will be along at some point. Is it possible that the necessary shimming required only takes place on the corresponding bevel gear this meshes with in this instance? I don't have first hand knowledge here, but is this similar to (approx) 1 minute 50 seconds on video below?

  3. Hi Chris, funny, only a few mins ago, I discovered this exact video! He seems to know what's he's at. It's common sense to have shims on the shaft in question, so I will persevere.

    Thanks for the reply!

  4. when you say "shaft in question" I take it that you mean the one in the video and not the one you first mentioned. I can see that designing the set-up with shims only on the former makes perfect sense (and I think this is what you meant) because with the latter (your) shaft, you have to deal with the age-old problem of shimming for correct bearing clearance/end play for the shaft itself when assembled with the carrier making it impossible to additionally shim for bevel clearance at the same time unless large diameter shims also introduced either side of the (separate) bevel gear/shaft.

  5. I can't recall ever finding those shims inside a square case motor and...
I've built dozens of them without any bottom bevel or bearing problems to date, over the last 42+ years.

  6. That's reassuring.

I'd settled on 24 as well but hesitated to post a reply, just in case I was wrong.

Back to Classics looks like a great setup.

  7. reassuring to hear this from someone who's actually done this. :upyeah:

  8. Cheers for the link, been looking for a supplier of Mille conn rod bearing shells for a while.
Last time I had my engine apart you could get bits from the main dealer :D

  9. When is a washer not a washer? When it's on a Ducati, then it's a shim.

  10. above says "file not found" Andy - only reviewing this because might be doing some shimming myself soon (groan).

  11. Just checked and unfortunately it looks like the Bevel Heaven forum is 'Temporarily Unavailable' hence the file not found.

And doubly unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember exactly what the informative answers might be either... ho hum : unamused:

My motor was rebuilt by Tony Brancato and that's exactly what I found on mine i.e. no shims on the internal spindle, and how I reassembled it and I've had no issues.

I'm thinking it might only require shimming on one side because of the action & forces produced by the meshed bevels.

  12. I know Tony quite well. He's a perfectionist when it comes to Ducati motors.

  13. yes, it's working now, but have you tried joining that Forum? - it seems to be impossible at the moment (tried half a dozen times) and in lieu of any explanation i'm going to take a guess that it's down to "Bots" and spammers getting a foot in the door via the Forum Enrollment form* - a similar thing might be happening on the 851/88 Forum also as despite me being a past member going back many years, i can't get accepted to renew my password (or similar requirement to get recognised).

  14. EDIT
Turns out i was already a member, not sure how far back, but password not accepted despite it being saved to chrome when last used the Forum, and despite me making sure new password complies with requirements (upper case/lower case/numbers etc) - it still wouldn't accept the change/submission.
3/the "board administrator contact page" has been disabled...
