…questions. A nice low miles PP has come up for sale not too far away from me. 4000klms on the clock and less than 12 month old. Touring pack, heated seat, top box ( not that I want centre stand or top box…) The bike is at a dealers around 2 hours ride and I am thinking about a change from the r1250gs, which has been a great bike tbh. Miss my Ducatis though (still think they should have kept the size/weight down, but it seems to be the way of things) so wanting to see if a deal could be struck subject to me really liking the bike on viewing. To the PP owners out there: Just how much adjustment is there with the Ohlins? Sag, pre-load, damping….independent back and front? Probably the only things wrong for me with the GS is weight, lack pf suspension fine tuning and the 19” front wheel, which limits tyre choice. (Add in a bit of excitement maybe) In perspective, its seems the current crop of V4 multis only save around 10kilos of weight! Is the PP really agile? There are actually no serious problems in real terms with agility on the GS. I like super tight back roads for a play, and comfort en-route MPG. Yes, yes, I know, some of you dont worry etc. But I do…40mpg average, 45 on a steady run? 35 if hooning? I have read mpg improves with miles, which fits in with my last multi a few years back.
Lots of suspension tuning ability, Rear preload and damping is all done electronically, Front damping electronic, but preload can be adjusted manually. So you can set the bike up for your correct Sag. As far as excitement goes, i think it will definitely tick that box, nothing wrong with a GS as far as capability goes, but definitely not in the same league when you want to press on and have some fun,i find my PP very agile and easy to handle. As far as MPG goes, mine as got better on 5000 miles now, you will see similar to your GS, if not a little worse dependent how much you twist your wrist
I would add, coming from a first generation Multistrada 1200, the V4 Pikes Peak is surprisingly heavy to push around the garage. I found I could not load the bike onto my trailer on my own because it is about 30kg heavier. Once on the move, the bike is agile but don’t expect the Rosso IV’s to work particularly well in the cold and wet. I ride all year round above 4°C and I found the tyre took 20 or so miles to warm up. I’m 1.93m tall and the riding position is very comfortable although, given I’ve had my coccyx removed, I find the seat “firm” (unforgiving). I’m only 500 or so miles in but am very happy. The V4 is most definitely not the same as the V2 but not in a bad way, just different. Andy
The V4 is heavy when stationary and it’s a reach to the bars if you are not over 6ft imho. The engine is a step on from the v twins and certainly the boxer twins but it does like to drink. I don’t think it’s that far away from your figures for your Beemer though. Probably 5-10% less miles to the gallon.
I find mine much less top heavy than my 1260 Multi was for some reason, so I find it a bit easier to move around than the 1260. But is bloody hard to get in my trailer compared to my 1299, but not really a fair comparison. Suspension, as seems common with Multis with elec suspension the front preload will be almost wound to it least setting from the factory, so doing nothing, 1260 was the same. I bought the heated raised seat for mine, it seems to have more padding, so is comfy, and warm. I'm running Roadtec 01 SE's, they seem really good in the cold, was out on Saturday, and found I had been right to the edge of tyre, roads weren't great. But something a bit sportier will go on for TD's. I find it really good fun on the road, obviously not a sportsbike, but in truth probably just as quick or a bit quicker in real on road conditions. I do miss the excess power of the 1299, which would lift the front wheel for fun, I've got wheelie control off on the PP, and its a bit more reluctant. In summary, get one, they're brilliant
Thanks for the feedback, I have literally had so many bikes. The GS ‘is’ actually agile’ish’ ( wide bars, tight roads) and rock steady mid corner. I have ridden a 1098 tricolore with the wrong tyres fitted that was positively lethargic in comparison through the corners. Some would say it was planted, I would say it was slow steering, each to their own interpretation in the real world. Sounds like the suspension on the PP has the required adjustability. Had bikes before where the ‘latest electronic tech’ basically meant fixed and compromised parameters. Annoying.
I have just over 4,500 miles on my '22 PP, and after the 600-mi check, I changed to the lower Ducati heated seat, and rode with that for another 500 miles. At around 1,200 miles, I installed the Sargent Heated Driver & Passenger Seats: https://www.sargentcycle.com/Plus-WS-701-SE1-IHFR I can easily ride for 3-5 hrs in a mix of riding on backroads and on the highway without discomfort. For reference, I'm 6'1" and 220 pounds. Sargent frequently runs discounts on their products - I got the seats in the link for just under $800 USD on-sale.
Thank you for your experience and the link Unfortunately I’m a bit of a special case with seats having had surgery to remove my coccyx. It's a very sore subject Andy
I have never owned a PP but do have a 1260S and a new RS. The RS is in an entirely different league & probably a good step up from a V4PP!!!!
Don't know if I dreamt the conversation, as I can not find it now, but I'm sure someone on here was talking about re calibrating the quick shifter? I'm sure someone said they do it every ride. So, my question is, how do you do it? I can't find anything in the menu for quick shifter? Tyres yes, quick shifter no. Someone at the back -"RTFM!!"
The correct function of the quick shifter is one of the reasons you run through the tyre calibration function. There is no discrete qs calibration. Andy
Thanks Andy, that will explain why I couldn't find the thread on qs. I'll do the tyre calibration next time I'm out
I'm still working my way through all the rider aids As I found out yesterday, there is a "quick shifter strategy" update for the V4 Pikes Peak. No idea what that means as I only managed 30 miles on the journey home and I couldn't tell if there was any difference Andy
I’ve lost count how many updates I’ve had on my PP - can honestly say not noticed any difference from any of them. Wonder whether they’re checks rather than changes !
But other than the engine, what are the differences? I'm still in a quandary as to whether I want/need the RS
