FIM chip tuning and my 748R (853)

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by steelys, May 22, 2012.

  1. Well i think i know the answer to this one, but im willing and somewhat hoping to be surprised...I have a very nice 748r converted to 853.....fitted with an FIM chip, its starts fine, and its great at high speed, but it has flat spots at about quarter throttle. It need s re map etc, does anybody in the UK do this anymore with these chips? or do i have to go down the power commander route? Or what other options do i have, yes i could sell it before anyone suggests that...

    thanks for any help

  2. Chris at CJS can do a custom remap on the ECU or a powercommader and set up. Both ways require dyno time.............. Mine is running at 125bhp and 72ft/lb (rwbhp)with road tyres and 112 bhp SAE with big hot sticky slick.

  3. Thanks, i am a fan of you get what you pay for, but his price indication suggests a remap and tune equals what a power commander plus tune roughly works out at, anyone used him in reality and have a sense of cost? Unless a remap is a better deal etc. Probably best i call them and understand more

  4. I do think CJS costs are the same as a powercommander and remap, basically its the same thing he is doing - but without a powercommander. Mapping mine takes arounfd 3 hours after each series of changes. So works out cheaper in the long run as I went the powercommander route. If you are getting a map once and only once, both ways are comaparable. But repeated remaps would seem to make the CJS method a bit expensive. Plus he is miles from me, it would need a long day to get any foibles sorted wheras I have a good relationship with my engine builder/dyno guy so popping in for an explority run is easy peasy.

  5. Yes im in Hampshire, and CJS is around 80 miles away from me. Ill ring him and get a quote....i get a lot of popping back on the over run, im suspecting its over fueling, so maybe i can convince myself theres a cost saving in fuel involved!

  6. Hi,

Have you simply had a go at making small adjustments to the pot in the ecu?

My old 748R was cracking and popping like a bastardo on over run....!!!
All I did was increase the fueling slightly and she was as good as gold!

Ok, it's not an exact science but it was free and it worked...:upyeah:

  7. Hi,
good point, I recently had the bike serviced, local Ducati dealer, they fitted the chip and 853 conversion, many years back. They tweaked it and improved it a bit, not sure what they did mind. Its cuts out as well, as you are coming to a stop, again on the overun. that and ive not adjusted the pot before, where is it?

  8. In reality a 853 conversion requires setting up correctly. An R spec one even more so, the showerhead system isn't the best lower down the rev range as standard. A dyno set up (ECU remap or PCIII) is using the AFR to get the best out of the motor and give it an easier time too. Under or overfuelling is not what you want. It will be intersting to see the results you get........I may even pop mine there one day

  9. I have the FIM software. I've done a couple of 853R's as well so have some base maps (zone mods') to. I'm just top side of Nottingham though. Chris (CJS) may have the software, not sure, but now you have two options :upyeah:

  10. Nelly, thanks, thats a pretty cool option, are you a shop, dealer etc? of just have the tools?

  11. Nelly is an independent with a great reputation.

  12. Try giving Dynotech a call just outside Basingstoke, not sure if they have FIM but does great Dynotech work with PC

  13. Think you may find he's Ducati main dealer....but reputation the same :)

  14. The thing to remember with a powercommander is it's only half a job. The PC can only 'fudge' the fuelling and doesn't have the same number of throttle positions for adjustment as the ECU. Whilst you will undoubtedly get an improvement if you want to do the job properly a ECU remap is the way to go. Furthermore with the remap you can also adjust spark timing and rev limit (not sure if that applies to all ECU's).

You will tell the difference with a proper remap.

  15. My mistake , Nelly trades under Cornerspeed a quick Google should give more info.
