996 996 Tidy Up

  1. The coolant was bubbling in the expansion tank above the horizontal cylinder, and it was hissing from the cap on the top tank

    The temp gauge was reading a temp, can't recall what temp though, I just turned it off as soon as I saw it

  2. Seem to remember the expansion tank isn't pressurised so lack of cap isn't a problem. Maybe check the radiator cap?
     
  3. I take it, these two plugs should be connected?

    The same (looking) plugs are connected on my 916, although, they are to the left side of the battery as looking at it, and these are on the right side

    Would/could this have anything to do with the issue?

    The white plug will be cleaned up before reconnecting

    I have checked the relay, appears to be working fine

    I have checked voltage at the plug for the Cooling fan switch, shows 12v
     
  4. Right, checked the cooling fan switch, it appears to be opening and closing as it should

    Had it running on tockover again, and it boiled up in the top header tank, by the headstock, there were bubbles and steam coming from the seal between the tank and the cap neck

    The fan started and stopped as it should

  5. That 4 pin plug looks like the R&R plug.
     
  6. It was, I checked the voltage on the battery, then checked again with the bike running, no difference

    Plugged it in, now shows higher voltage when running
     
  7. Sorry, damned autocorrect, it should have said hissing from the cap on the top tank, not missing, the cap on the top tank is definitely fitted
     
  8. I know you said from the cap, but these tanks have the habit of splitting

  9. From what I could see, there was air bubbles coming from where the filler neck meets the header tank, then I got steamed out :joy:
     
  10. ? It must be pressurised, surely. How can it not be? A pin-sized hole will soon show that there's pressure there when it's trying to boil. There's no radiator cap on the 996.

  11. I was on about the wrong tank i.e. the overflow tank in the V.
    When I realised that, I have commented that the correct tank in question does have the habit of splitting in various places.

  12. He's right, the tank by the headstock is notorious for splitting. As above they all do it apparently. Mine did and was pissing coolant on every ride. A fine mist of it...
     
  13. The bike is fully back together, and in a usable condition, although, some new parts are being collected tomorrow, resulting in the tank being removed again

    The coolant issue appears to be the plug for the pressure regulator on the expansion tank by the headstock, not being fully connected, the wire securing clip is missing from the plug, hence the plug coming away from the connector on the regulator

    Plug pushed firmly in place, the bike has been run for a couple of long periods on a high tickover, and taken for a test ride, with no issues

    A new plug was ordered from the Bay of Fleas, hopefully, the clip is the same size as the one on the bike

    A replacement airbox is being collected tomorrow (Friday), and, if time permits, some small fixings parts will be collected from Ducati Coventry on the way home

    Once those parts are fitted, I am going to try and get some use out of the bike, and, if all goes well, I will be looking at getting a replacement aftermarket fairing kit from China, some of the panels are not genuine panels, and, most, if not all, need repainting, been quoted £1200 for a full repaint by a local paintshop, plus the cost of new/used genuine panels, whereas, the full fairing kit is £400, from a company that I have used previously for a full fairing kit for a gsxr750

  14. But of an update, a carbon fiber airbox has been collected from @cookster on Friday

    The parts ordered from Ducati Coventry, which should have also been collected Friday, were not collected, they assured me they were open on Good Friday, but, when I arrived, they were closed, I called them, the automated message said they were closed all through the easter weekend, so, a couple of phonecalls were made Saturday morning, and the parts were sourced from @nelly at Cornerspeed

    If anyone needs a rear tank mount rubber and sleeve, DC will have some in stock

    A replacement 3 pin plug was ordered from a seller on eBay, I only need the wire clip

    Now, I need to find sone rivets to swap the airbox clips over from the old airbox to the new one, that may be a trip to Halfrauds tomorrow

  15. Done the metal clip, and the rear tank rubber grommet

    Need to get some rivets tomorrow before I can do the airbox

  16. Credit where credit is due.....

    After the let down last Friday, I have received a phonecall today from Mr John Hackett, the owner of Ducati Coventry, apologising for the miscommunication regarding their easter opening hours

    Suffice to say, my teddies have been picked up, my dummy has been replaced, apology accepted, and I will be collecting one of the items, plus a couple of other bits, tomorrow

  18. Not done much to the 996 recently, too many other things that need doing, which, in the mind of The Dragon (SWMBO), are more important :rolleyes:

    Not fitted the new airbox as yet, I decided to order some new clips that secure the intake pipes to the airbox, instead of fannying about trying to remove them from the old unit

    I have also ordered a replacement right side air intake tube, as on the outer part of mine, all the fastening points are cracked and broken, some with chunks missing, the ebay seller sent notification last night that it has just been despatched

  19. Some parts collected, some parts delivered

    4 clips for the airbox to air intake tube, £38 :eek:

    Now, just need a bit of time to spare to get them fitted :worried:
