Ive been away from Ducati for a while, After a few bikes since selling my last Ducati im now on a late Gen3 Superduke but looking at getting a 996s as a second bike for playing around with on the odd Sunday, Can someone advise me on how to tell if a 996s is a genuine S? Did they also come as a genuine mono? Any info on this bike model would be much appreciated. Cheers Jack
Should have an ohlins shock on it, they came with biposto sub frame but single seat unit. Engine internals are different , straight though link pipe on the exhaust.
From what I collected on our side of the channel: - Camshaft and titanium conrods (156.2.019.1A) same as 996 SPS (US excepted, which had the standard 996 bip engine). - 50mm full exhaust (inc. headers) with Termi stamped exhaust. - Short ratio gearbox - Ohlins rear shock (Showa front) - Biposto subframe but could be ordered with mono or bip seat, with 996S written on both. - Specific 996S user manual.
It’s actually very easy to turn a standard 996 in what looks like a 996S. A lot of 996 owners are convinced they own a 996S because they have the Ohlins and the mono seat, not even knowing about the full 50 exhaust… And they could very well sell that as a S, in total honesty. The only way to know for sure, without splitting the cases, is for the owner to contact Ducati in Bologna ([email protected]) providing proof of ownership, pics of frame and engine numbers, pics of the bike, and only them will be able to tell you if a 996 is really an original S.
So this exhaust must be rarest of rare? - and worth a squadzillion..? I only ask as I have a pair in a box...
I guess it’s a matter of offer/demand ratio? With the CT (MOT) finally coming in France, demand could grow for OEM silencers… Is it a full line with 50 headers too?
Tbh I don't even know! haven't really looked as preoccupied with other bikes atm. (Ps: I've already seen an uptake in people searching OEM exhausts...OEM prices of the 999 50Kg system have risen...when a couple of years back they were worthless.)
That's interesting re 999, I have an oem that was taken off when I bought the bike 18 years ago, planning on refitting it and selling the termi system, apologies for thread hijack
i had a 996s and was a fantastic bike which i wished i never sold.. as normal lol as above, 50mm system, ohlins rear and standard stg damper. small P6 ecu with Twin injector throttle bodies. mine also had the TI rods and made 128hp at the back wheel after a power commander PC3 map.. would love another Edit- sorry got confused with the nomenclature 1.6m was the small non SPS version...
Now that’s something I’ve never read or heard about… I thought all 996 (except the R) had dual injectors TB and 1.6M ECUs which can’t handle dual injectors (916 SP kept the P8, which is good with dual injectors). Didn’t 996 owners used the Ultimap chip to get rid of the 3500rpm «hole» by switching one injector off on each cylinder?
When I got mine it had the second injectors unplugged and it ran like crap, I chucked the no name eprom put on an oem one and plugged the injectors back in and it runs perfectly now. 1.6M ecu.
And with this OEM configuration, when you coast along at 3000 rpm, if you go wide open throttle, you don’t get a « no response » type reaction at 3500 rpm? http://www.bikeboy.org/duel_inject_throt.html
Guys thanks for all the info, Put my mind at ease on a few things i needed to know, I ended buying one that was on ebay that was in Churches performance cars, Photo below, Regarding carbon parts is there a make out there that is recommended for these older Ducatis?
