Odd one this, stripped down the hub last Friday to clean out the usual debris, fitted new chain and sprockets, all went well, done it quite a few times on this bike and other older Ducati's. Rode 250 odd miles on Sunday, all good, cleaned and lubed the chain when I got home and when moving the wheel slowly I could hear a slight squealing, just as if a stone had got caught in the caliper so took that off but squeal still there, messed about for another few minutes trying to find the culprit the slackened the pinch bolts off and the squeal disappeared, re-torqued the pinch bolts and the squeal was back. It's a new one on me, bearings in the hub were fine and smooth, if I torque the bolts to 20nm no squeal, 35nm and there's the noise again, as said sounds like a stone on the disc but that's clear. I'll remove the hub again at the weekend but, anyone else had this?
I would remove the eccentric again and check that your tools are ok, torque wrench ok, screw tightening 1-2-1-2 ...,? the bearing play is 0.02mm tighter at 35Nm, perhaps dirt in the double bearing or defective? here something else about eccentrics, but not specifically Multistrada https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10152835-9999.pdf https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2023/MC-10238476-0001.pdf
Is the chain alignment correct and not catching when fully tightened ? Just a thought as you have changed them ?
Chain all good, I will remove the hub again at the weekend, as you say, could be a spec of dirt in between the bearing surfaces which I missed.
Much research has been done on the MV forums into why the bearings failed in the hub so frequently The main reason being the pinch bolts being too tight Another being the chain being too tight
While ducati say the hub isn't servicable, there is a full youtube video out there of someone doing exactly that. It's for a panigale but I don't think the hub's have changed much. Ducati Panigale Eccentric Hub Restoration
Yeah I had the hub apart 20k miles ago, easy to do, wasn't much grease in there at 30k miles, cleaned, repacked with the right grease and it was still good this time. Hub has always been torqued correctly in my ownership but who knows about the 20k miles it had with the previous owner.
Firstly, glad you are on the ball/alerted to the squeal. With the wheel removed, how is the quality of hub rotation, with the squeal/fully tightened versus without the squeal out of interest? i.e. is it any harder or clunkier to revolve with pinch-bolts fully tightened plus squeal? I would replace all bearings and seals not only as a result of this, but also with mileage in mind. There are at least 3 different designs used despite them being interchangeable as an assy apparently, so you need to determine carefully before ordering.
Hub rotation is fine both tightened and loose, doesn't sound like a bearing noise, will report back after I've removed it again.
Just a quick update, stripped hub back down, nothing untoward found, put it back together and no noise at all, no idea what it was, which is annoying but, you can't fix something if you can't find anything to fix.
Wasn’t a dry seal was it..? I had a squeak coming from my front wheel once, turned out it was the bearing rubber slip seal was dry on the wheel spacer, a little lube and it was gone and never heard it ever again..
I wouldn't have thought so, lubed everything up the first time, I thought it maybe one of the springs within a seal which may have come dislodged but they were both fine, it's a mystery.
There was a recall on the Panigale V4S a while back to reduce the torque from 25Nm to 20Nm, for the swing arm eccentric hub pinch bolts. Not sure if it affects the Multistrada but it certainly alleviated the squeaking noise from my bike.
Yes I saw that in the post above, not happened in the previous 50,000 miles but you never know, I'll just ride and forget, unless it happens again.
