Ok Fight Fans - Best Ever Boxing Punch?

  1. And I think he’s probably right. I hope so anyway. Not seen him for ages but he looks quite lean (well, lean for him anyway). Which may suggest we see a deadly serious Fury rocking up at the weigh in. Super interesting fight. Can’t wait…

  2. It’s crazy to think that Usyk is deemed small when he’s actually the same height and slightly heavier than prime Ali.

  3. Fury has a point in the modern era.

    Tyson Fury 206 / 126kg

    Lennox Lewis 1.96 / 116kg

    Mike Tyson 1.78m / 100kg

    Oleksandr Usyk 1.9m / 100kg

  4. Yeah... can't wait either & let's hope it lives up to the hype.

It'll be like the 1950s for me listening to the fight on the radiogram in the dark with a bottle of Co-op blended.

  5. And Joe Louis was slightly lighter than Ali @ 213 lbs & 6'1"

  6. True, but Tyson had speed, power & devil may care persistence and Lennox was ring savvy.

  7. I think Jack Dempsey was only 12 and a half stone. We’re definitely getting bigger.

I was having a look round the museum in Waterloo (1815) There were dressed up mannequins in original uniforms. They looked tiny. And of course there was an original guillotine. Looked like a device for executing kids…

  8. How come? Bailiffs been round??

  9. Agreed, but their height to weight ratio's are all higher than Usyk. Iron Mikes ratio is closer, but that combined with his punch rate and animal aggression also gave him an advantage that Usyk has never had.

I think (and actually hope) Fury's height, weight and reach will make him the next unified champion.

  10. Ha! too tight for pay per view, cable, sky or whatever you need nowadays to watch pretty much any sport...

  11. No boozers showing it??

  12. A fine idea but out in the sticks & the nearest one is 20 miles away... plus after 40 years of pubbing it there's not much appeal.

Being a curmudgeonly misanthropic old bastard doesn't help either :D

  13. Yeah. I read somewhere recently that the average height of British soldiers in WWI was only 5’6” for officers and 5’2” for other ranks. One of the reasons behind the proto-welfare state which sprung up after 1918 was the concern that so many working class men were sufficiently malnourished at the time of enlisting that their fighting efficiency was severely compromised.

There were still some giants around though, eg: Jess Willard who took Jack Johnson’s title (by KO in the 26th round of a scheduled 45!) in c.1910 was 6’7” and 18 stone.

  14. I remember watching that! As a slack jawed 10 year old Leeds fan…

  15. This guy (Curmel Moton) is one to watch. He’s only 17 and has only just turned pro, but (a) he had about a million amateur fights and barely lost any (IIRC, his record was 157-3), (b) he’s one of Mayweather’s protèges.

  16. What a fight... you can see why people are talking about him.

In addition to natural talent he has been coached really well and taken on what has been taught. Classic boxers stance, high right hand, fast strong jab, good feet and aggressive ring awareness. Like Mayweather has lovely balance. Perhaps needs to work on his defence & curb his enthusiasm but can take a punch.

    Fancy pants Whittaker take note.

  17. Platform shoes, flared patch pocket trousers, snorkel parka, blue & white Leeds scarf & long hair with Sweet, Mud & the Rubettes ringing in your ears... :D

It tickled me the fight was 60 yards from the ball but it was a fine right cross from Norman Hunter right on the button. Can you imagine the uproar if that happened in one of today's premiership games... take the knee indeed.

  18.
Yep, different world today… and not in a good way.

There have been more recent fisticuffs during matches. I remember Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyre (both playing for Newcastle ) having an on pitch disagreement….

And who can forget Monsieur Eric? Take that yeh basahh…

  19. Eric's karate kick was, imho, opinion fantastic... just what everyone would want to do to some ghastly gobby cockney... sardines & trawlers indeed
