wasn't quick enough..........it crept up on me quite silent from the front..........then boom from the rear!
Apparently you can hire it for a private party Vulcan XH558 Hired For a Private Party " Dunsfold 19/08/12 " - YouTube Weird how something who's prime purpose is to kill, maim and destroy creates so much wonder!
In the age of a constant threat of nuclear armageddon it was there to deter and protect. Don't consider the wonderment past and present weird at all
It's always a magnificent sight and sound seeing the Vulcan in flight. Oftens makes me wonder why they couldnt have kept Concorde in service to 1 degree or another when they canned it 10 years ago. Shame really
They've all been my way this last few days, as the VFest is on (pompey dockyard festival of music and navy history) and expect far more tomorrow and Monday
If you want to see one of them in flight, book yourself a trip to South Africa............they are banned from flying in the UK. AL
Saw the Vulcan yesterday over Swaffham! Got pics on my phone which I will try to put up later! Unfortunately Al I don't think the lightnings are flying anymore :-( they had one crash, and if my memory serves me correctly the guy who owned them ( Mike Beachy Head, yup that's his name) decided that he wasn't prepared to risk anyone else's life. Real shame cos I always said that if I won the lottery that was going to be my treat to myself!
Chris.........The Lightnings are not permitted in UK airspace.........not even privately owned ones (if they exist) or museum pieces that are capable of flight (which they aren't). IIRC the UK Government sold all ours to South African Airforce and then promptly banned them from flight in the UK because they are too dangerous (although I don't know what reason they are dodgy). I'm also not sure if there are any Buccaneers capable of flying either (apart from the South African Navy....I think)..............but that was another brilliant plane to see......(or sea). I have an old WW2 airfield within a few hundred yards of my place, which gets visited by numerous older aircraft, I assume on sighting flights; plus whenever there is a national function (IE Queens birthday etc etc etc) I reckon all the jet engined planes use Sizewell power station as the rendezvous point because they follow the line of the pylons and overhead lines which aren't a million miles from me.
