May 2023, 11 months ago I had new fork seals fitted to a 2013 MTS 1200 with Skyhook with 18,000 miles. Charged me £250 fitted. I've just gone to get the bike out of the garage to clean after riding home last night and found a puddle of oil on the garage floor. Just as I'm about to blame the wife/kids for spilling oil on the garage floor I see oil running down the N/S for leg, all over the caliper and fork bottom/caliper mounts. It's done 8000 miles since having them done. I've rang the bike shop who say they guarantee consumables for 30 days, he states that they only use genuine parts. The receipt states the seals are 7350175 fork seal 48x57.9x9.5/11.5. The Ducati part number is 34921401a. 1. how long should fork seals last? This isn't weeping its pouring into a puddle on the garage floor. 2. Are these genuine or even correct seals (they look green in colour which doesn't seem right. 3. Should there be a guarantee on fork seals?
Yeah doesn't say what they fit. I don't believe he has fitted genuine ones, or even the correct ones. So far he has offered a discount rate on fitting a seal to the N/S leg. I've NEVER had one for seal replaced?
There's an old trick to cure a leaky seal. If the leak is caused by a foreign body - grit or somesuch - jammed in the seal then get some thin flexible plastic, like an old 35mm negative, and carefully slip it up between the fork and the seal. This can clean them without damaging them. Worth a try before shelling out another £250.
The oil has literally poured out of the leg so the hack isnt going to do it I don't think. It will need topping up. Seems like he has fitted a cheaper aftermarket set of seals, £22.99 as opposed to genuine £72.43, and one has massively failed. I think he should replace both for free with the genuine ones he told me he was fitting at the time? Or am I being unreasonable?
I think you are right. Especially if you paid £72 for them rather than £23. Even if he didn't overcharge he should still have fitted genuine parts.
He's charged £22.99 for the seals. However told me he only fits genuine! At the time I never thought to check the price of parts on the receipt against Ducati Parts website?
