I've replaced my Hypermotard 1100S rear wheel bearings with SKF bearings. I can still feel play in the wheel! The sprocket side is a double row bearing which I believe requires preloading by the sprocket side nut. Only things I can think of: - The sprocket nut isn't tight enough. - The grease I've used it just a general purpose grease so my nut won't be at quite the defined torque setting as per using "Grease B". - My torque wrench is off. - Or the bearing is faulty. Is it a single bearing with 2 rows of balls or 2 bearings back to back? Did you go with the same clearance on the new bearings? If you went with a higher clearance they would always have play when they are cold. Most bearings would be C2 clearance but if you have C3 or higher then you're very likely to feel play.
Hi, Thanks for your reply. I fitted a “SKF BAH0062 Rubber Sealed Double Row Wheel Bearing 35x62x28mm” which is what was in there and what I am led to believe is fitted at factory. Clearance: * Standard (Not sure what that is though) Thanks
This particular bearing is a angular contact bearing which has 2 rows of balls, one outer race but 2 inner races. When clamped tight it will automatically give the designed preload or clearance. I don't think a bit of difference in torque is going to make a big difference in play. Have you measured the play with a DTI or similar. It can be very misleading just doing it by feel. It can feel a lot more than it actually is. If it was me, and I was sure I fitted everything correctly with all parts in the right place and everything is tight, I wouldn't worry about feeling some play. Obviously is difficult to quantify "some play".
I find that Petsmith and I are normally pretty well aligned on engineering related stuff, but I have to say, I would never accept any perceptible or measurable play on any motorcycle wheel bearing set-up on a bike made later than 1970 ish when all was torqued up. IMO, if you can feel any movement, there is a problem that needs sorting out.

Appreciate it's difficult to quantify "some play" over the internet but I wasn't expecting to feel any once rebuilt, you can just about hear an audible knock as you feel for the play. Once the rain goes I'll ride the bike and check for play with a warm bearing to see any difference. Thanks
