1299 Ignition On Without A Key

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by David Rae, May 15, 2024.

  1. Hy,
    Just started troubleshooting this.....

After a winter lay off, replaced the battery and after 2 weeks its dead again. replaced the battery and the bike now randomly comes alive on its own, no key, lights on.
Unplugged the oem alarm, inspected connector no faults. Symptoms the same without the alarm. The starter button is inop when this happens btw..
Putting the key in with the dash lit and fuel pump running, turn ign on and the starter operates normally. Switch ign off, sometimes fuel pump/injectors buzz away..
Taking the e-lock relay out kills the bike when the key out condition occurs. 100ohm across the relay coil and primary contacts open circuit with power off. There appears to be 13v at the relay socket, assuming this is normal with the ecu switching the earth when required. Refitting the relay seems to trigger the condition again but not always.
About to take out the BBS unit and inspect but I'm at a loss with this 'strange' effect.

Wondered if there are any other instances out there that might be similar,..? only one I could find was with a supersport939... Any pointers in the right direction appreciated.

    Short video here...

  2. another step ---So, it appears theres batt volts on the r/y wire from the e-lock module to the e-lock relay with the ignition off, key out. This isnt the case with the wifes 959. Checking the relay base theres zero V with key off and out....as you'd expect looking at the wiring diagram.
So the 12V supply from the e-lock module is being supplied regardless of key position. When the bike comes alive on its own with key 'off', the starter button is inhibited although the dash, fuel pump etc runs. Turning the key on in this condition allows the starter to function so the e-lock system is recognising the key position/presence. I'm thinking the CAN line to/from the ECU is there to purely allow engine operation...so, e-lock module needs replacing?? Or I've read elsewhere the Pani ECU is fragile when the battery is low.

  3. On earlier bikes this was a symptom of a faulty coil/injector/pump relay. It is a 3 quid part off eBay. I would start by replacing relay 38 on the wiring diagram and see it that cures the problem.

  4. Thanks Chris, item 38 on the wiring diagram from the 1299s manual is the clutch switch..40 is the fuel pump relay? I'll swap it out for the one on 959 tomorrow and see if it helps..Its connected to the ecu battery monitor input. I mistakenly referred to the relay in my original post as the fuel pump relay, it indirectly controls the fuel pump but I was actually pulling the e-lock relay out.

  5. Correct 40

  7. Massive thanks to Chris :upyeah::beer::beer:, It seems to be fixed. Batt volts steady ignition off. There is a tenuous link in the wiring diagram that has a perm +ve supply to the relay 40 which is connected to the battery monitoring input to the ecu. The relay was stubborn to remove and clearly tarnished terminals. It doesn't pay to wash these bikes does it?.....
I'll see how it goes over the next few days..If I dont report back then its fully sorted. I replaced both relays on the rhs elect panel fyi.:)

  8. Spoke too soon... its still coming alive on its own..I have another vid which capture the boot up sequence..

its 2 mins long with no pauses..I use the alarm this time which I've not done in a while

  9. Ok, so the bike appears dead at the moment, but pulling the ETV relays, they appear powered up as they can be heard clicking upon removal. re-inserting they click on once more. From the diagram, the ecu controls these by supply a ground..so the Ecu is supplying ground here all the time, key in or out, ign on or off. When the dash becomes alive, pulling the ETV relays (the two on the rhs) de-powers the dash at least...

  10. Could you get the bike to a dealer for a diagnostics scan or is there a forum member in the area with an OBDStar or JPDIAG?

  11. I have jp/melco diag but I didnt think there were many options on it for the 1299 aside from resets etc?

  12. I have an OBDStar myself. I was under the impression that JPDIAG read fault codes as well.

  13. It does, been on nights, I'll try it today. Such a weird fault maybe dealer kit needed now..

  15. Some of those might be old glitches, I cleared a couple on my Multistrada this afternoon. Having just replaced a rear when speed sensor I had read and cleared the errors related to that and there were a couple of others. Will check again in a month or two.

Might be worth clearing the lot, you have a record above, and running/riding the bike if you can and seeing which ones come back. Process of elimination.

  16. Yes. Reset all, and have left the bike with the battery connected and asleep, no alarm, well stby at least..

  17. so, it seems the e-lock has a mind of its own....I transposed the e-lock onto the wifes 959 and it powered up on its own with my lock fitted no key...ffs..the newest pt no is 38510453B. currently 460GBP.
    Anyone got a discount code?
Hopefully this helps someone out in the future as the lock is used across the 899,959,1199 and 1299 ranges.:upyeah:
