748 Got One! Work To Be Done…

  1. Hi all, finally gotten hold of a 748 which I’ll be collecting tomorrow and on the whole, delighted to have gotten a decent one (just 4100 miles from new?!)….

It’s in fantastic condition, but like many many of the era, the paint at the back of the engine is starting to flake slightly.

Any ‘how to’ vids or advice on how to get it back looking better again?? Is it a full engine out job??

    Cheers!

  2. I've elected to vapour blast and leave it bare. Yes, that's an engine out job. IMG_20240131_142933_860.jpg

  3. At least an engine-out is not a major ballache like on some other bikes.

  4. Are you splitting the cases/engine to do this. From previous experience, even vapour blasting and soda blasting are not without their risks (in that small particles of media can enter tiny blind holes in the castings or oilways/galleries and later work their way into the circulation, wreaking havoc with bearings, shells etc) It might be safer to mask off or seal and plate any orifices/threaded holes on the assembled engine and then vapour blast it. If necessary you can then remove the engine side covers and cam covers after the event to paint them. As for the cases, if you leave them bare will you not be opening yourself up to the risk of surface oxidization? You could have the engine Cerakoted, which would probably outlast the bike.

  5. Agreed. Definitely don’t vapour blast if you’re not splitting the cases. The risk is far too great. I’ve seen it done! A very competent person who took great care to ensure all was blanked off, silicone around seals etc etc. It only takes a minute amount of media in there to destroy bearings.
