Swingarms

  1. Does anyone have the definitive answer to SS swingarm weights?

    Steel
    Early Aluminium
    1000SS Later style Aluminium

Annoyingly I've had all 3 around me in the last year or so but not weighed them, and don't want to strip the one out of my 1000SS just to weigh it.

    Thanks.

  2. I think after a bit of Googling I've found some confirmed numbers.

    400/600/750/900SS Steel Swingarm - 4.9Kgs Bare
    900SS Aluminium Swingarm - 3.6Kgs Bare
    1000SS Aluminium Swingarm - 4.05Kgs Bare

As has been mentioned many times the 1000SS swingarm is supposedly stronger, than the older 900SS Aluminium one, and less prone to cracking where it clamps around the pivot bolt that connects it to the engine.
So it's a sought after upgrade on the earlier bikes, but there are very few around.

I'm lucky to have one in my 1000SS that I've fitted with 900SS/SL bodywork and tank:

Who wants to take a guess on the weight of this bad boy which is incredibly rare:

I'm thinking of sticking it in the above bike as it would suit the older look more.

  3. That is incredibly rare, JMC?
My own has a Metchamex, after I considered getting the same, an IE swingarm. Ive seen them going for silly money.
Your one will be super rare, and quite a talking point. How heavy is it?

  4. I've weighed it with the wheel spindle in the image, and it's 5Kgs exactly, so a heavy old lump, and not exactly an upgrade in that respect.

I've also found a couple of old EBAY auctions where they've sold for @£500, which would put a lot of petrol in the bike!

    A couple more images:

Another interesting thing, which I'm actually not too sure about is the chain adjustment mechanism:

From this side it looks quite normal:

But from the other side it can be seen that the threaded bar is held captive by a couple of hammered in Roll pins that stick out ready to catch a finger when cleaning:

  5. I've never seen anything like that, bit odd to use those pins?

    Lovely swingarm though

  6. This swingarm will be for sale in the spring. It comes with a motorcycle attached though :)

  7. Superspurt for sale Lyndsey? I remember reading about this with great interest, and it influenced my own build. Is this to pave the way for a new build?

  8. Yes, and yes . I need to thin out the herd anyway, I’ve had to let a few interesting things pass me by as I just don’t have the space.

  11. There is a build thread, but it was on the old Ducati Up North site which I believe is no longer.

  12. Shame, thanks anyway. :upyeah:

  13. Hi Grant, it was on the now defunct DuN site which migrated some time ago to the Ducati Community. The thread is ‘Project SuperSpurt’. So as not to ENTIRELY hijack this thread, drop me a message if you would like any info

  15. Good mod that, it's on my list for my ss swinger, going for 6mm or 8mm.

  16. I always go M8 if I can.
I even have some M10 in my workshop, but decided not to use them.

On this occasion I decided not to do the welding myself, just turned the bushes up on my lathe and popped a flat on them in my Mill.
I may sell the swingarm if I decide I don't like it, and my TIG welding consistency has gone to pot over the last couple of years due to mobility issues in my hands, which is annoying the hell out of me, but as you can see I have a good work contact who'll do me a favour.

  17. Thanks Nasher, I'm no welder but that does look nice, :upyeah:

(I know what you mean about hands had MRI results today looks like fusing a bone or two)

  18. I'd agree that M8 would be the best way to go. I'd love to be able to tig weld

  19. I've decided now that I really like the JMC arm in the 1000SS Mongrel:

    P3300010.JPG

But here's a question, are the 1000SS swingarms still as sought after as they once were for fitting to other SS variants?

Apart from the one that came out of the Mongrel, which isn't going anywhere, I do have another 1000SS swingarm that needs a bit of a clean up, and I'm wondering about selling it.
If it's not worth a lot I'll keep it for another project, but if it will go some way towards the cost of a pair of tyres I'd probably sell it.

  20. I'm not that up to date with the demand, but I can hazard a guess that they are, as less and less are available over time?
