  1. Well have agreed to buy this 2002 Monster dark 620ie with the rust in tank problem. Be a couple of days before it arrives as there are contracts and legalities to go through then have to get it registered. Brief recap it's a 2002 US model dark 620ie with 7677 miles showing on the clock. Been stood for nearly 2 years and now has a rusty interior to the tank that we will have a attempt at dealing with.

  2. Don't forget to change the belts as well.

  3. Be very careful if you decide to buy another tank to replace the current one. There are at least three variants in the way the tanks are molded (underside) to fit onto the frame and there is no practical way of making a wrong one fit. I bought two different ones, both described as the correct fit for my bike before buying a third one that actually did!

From the top they all look the same and I imagine the differences are between the models, but in my personal experience the sellers don't know this.

  4. Yes belts are a sensative subject it seems I notice on a service schedule that have just opened on the web that belts be changed every two yearsnow I find this odd having just replaced the cam belt on my MGF which has a service requirement of 60,000 miles or 6 years don't you find that odd also the belts are of the same construction and even possibly by the same manufacturer yet the service intervals are so different and there is no mention of mileage wiht the Ducati so imaging if one rode 60,000 miles a year those belts would have covered 120,000 miles in the service interval methinks the chances of belt failure would be much increased would you not agree?

By the way the MGF had covered less than3,000 miles it was changed on the time limit also not mileage.

  5. Thank you it seems that it is a mine field indeed.

The plan is to get some derusting stuff amd treat the tank then seal it just trying to find out what kits, materials, etc are available here. The owner has already stripped the fuel pump and cleaned it and replaced the fuel filter with a larger one from a car though he did not mention which pump as I understand things there ae two pumps on in tank and a high pressure pump for the injection system. He mentioned the in tank pump so I wonder if the looked at the HP pump. Hope he did as if that one is the issue and it needs replacing that is one expensive little bugger.

Somewhere along the line the insulation from under the tank has gone AWOL !!!! So will be getting some of the silver lined foam insulation used in engine bays to fit under the tank that is unless can obtain the correct stuff at a reasonable cost.

  6. There is only one fuel pump on the bike, in the tank. Carburettor models use a low pressure pump, ie models use a high pressure pump.

  7. I don't have any on my 900ie & I've certainly made it quite hot on occasion! I've Never had a problem with too much heat.

  8. Thanks for that and clearing that up as I was looking at parts on a Ducati suppliers site and it showed a pump that was totally different from the in tank normal round one and it was a simply stupid price and it said it was a high pressure on for the injection system.

  9. I will still add some insulation for peace of mind as it gets a mite warm here mid 40's C in summer.

  10. Best tank liner I’ve used is Por 15 if it’s available to you. Buy the complete kit if you can that comes with all the preparation chemicals.

  11. Not sure where can get Por15 from and it seems there is a problem with shipping it from the UK to Europe will try one of the European ebay sites. Meanwhile to bike has arrived and it runs but is a pig to start.
