Bye Bye Garmin - Carplay Is Here!

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Multirider75, Jun 12, 2024.

  1. Finally, an Apple CarPlay/ Android device to replace the good old Garmin.

Until Ducati etc have integrated CarPlay, this looks like a great alternative, and not too expensive either.

I just need to see what proper mounts they do, as the handlebar mount wont work for me. If this can be mounted above the clocks on the Iconic mount, then I’ll make the jump.

  2. That is interesting.

  3. My requirements are 1000nits+ brightness, AMPS mount pattern, IPX67 weather resistance and will work effectively with Android Auto without scaling issues (almost all illustrations are with Apple CarPlay).

Yet to find one that ticks all these boxes.

  4. Not sure about the claim it won’t drain your phone battery, the bluetooth connection will suck it dry :joy: I really don’t understand the hate for Garmin, now I’ve got my head around Tread, it’s easy to plan a route on the fly. Although I’ve not paired the phone (and never will :joy:) for all the traffic gubbins, I’m sure it’ll work fine. Andy

  5. Similar units can be had from Ali Express starting from £40 delivered. The mount in this one looks a bit nicer from what I've seen in the 2 minutes I looked but it seems quite a lot if money for what it is.

  6. CarPlay uses bluetooth to make the initial authenticated connection, then switches to wifi. This in itself isn't too draining on the battery, but if using navigation, the GPS processing will hammer it, so you still need to power the phone. I added a magsafe charger to the inside of my KTM's phone case/cubby-hole, and use a unit (EVKey L200) sourced from AliExpress. See here for more detail on my setup.

  7. More chat on CarPlay units in this thread, starting at post #34.

  8. I think if I wasn't using my phone as sat nav, and didn't want Garming (and similar dedicated ones), I'd try and go the route of a small tablet, that can do GPS, LTE, and have a MyRouteApp running on that independant of my phone.

  9. The more I think about it, the more Im just tempted to get a powered mount that goes above the clocks for the phone itself.

  10. But that only works well if the screen is good in bright sun. Is yours?

  11. Should take delivery of an adapter to mount my previous Android phone (Galaxy S9) on the bike, will them try using MyRouteApp on that using the WiFi hotspot on my current Android phone (Galaxy S21) for connectivity.

Have been running my current phone on a powered SP Connect mount, in a couple of configurations, for a year now. Just trying to minimise damage and be in a position that I'll have a backup when on tour.

Currently running a Ducati Performance mount mated to an SP Connect AMPS to their rosette type mount along with one of their anti vibration wireless adapters. Waiting on Evotech to get their SP Connect specific mount back in stock. A far neater mount that the cobbled together Garmin mount with extras to make the SP Connect system work with it.

  12. This is what I use. USB3 socket built in together with a waterproof phone it works well for me. Cost about £20 quid on Amazon 17183049641436271683175951326918.jpg 17183050135175652360589095378660.jpg

  13. This is the Iconic Parts quadlock mount. Damper and quadlock wireless charge head, and their cable that I soldered to the sat nav connector that's ready in there from factory. Works a charm, and I love having the satnav real close to my normal line of sight while looking on the road.

  14. Not sure it would fit on a Panigale V4 (despite looking out of place) but it would mean I could control all my Home Assistant devices whilst out and about, the possibilities would be endless! Home and garage lighting, gates, heating, door control access and more. However on a bike, probably too much of distraction when I can achieve the same thing on my phone when safely stopped. Saying that, I do use the Ducati Bluetooth DMS module for calls, turn by turn navigation and music, in conjunction with my phone, so I'll be fitting it back onto the new bike in the coming few days, having removed it from my last one.

  15. Probably!

  18. If you look at Europe and the rest of the world you will see what the “Sun” is. It looks scary

  19. I’ve tried it, don’t bother.

1.You can’t see a mobile phone in the sun.
    2. If you can remember what the sun is (besides a crap newspaper) and your phone is mounted in the sun it will overheat.

The Gizmo above sounds interesting. Unfortunately I haven’t got time to mess around/ risk it before leaving for the EMM later this week. The TomfuckingTom will have to do.
